Project X 6.5 Review – Specs, Flex, Weight
The Project X shafts may not get the same attention as HZRDUS and Dynamic Gold shafts; but they are still worth checking out if you have an aggressive tempo and need better performance out of your iron play.
The Project X 6.5 shaft in particular is a great shaft for better iron play because of the stiff tip and butt sections. However, it should be noted that one of the reasons why people like this shaft is that it comes in various weight and flex options. The Project X 6.5 is just a better option for faster and more aggressive swingers.
The flex of this shaft is denoted as “6.5.” True Temper uses a number system to dente flex as opposed to the regular, stiff and extra stiff classifications most of us are used to. But for all intents and purposes, the Project X 6.5 is equivalent to a stiff shaft. Will it be the right shaft for your game? Let’s find out.
Project X 6.5 Overview
One of the most remarkable things we found out by testing the Project X 6.5 was that it was very good at keeping shot dispersion tight.
We already knew that the Project X 6.5 was built to provide low launch and low spin; but what we found out on our own was that it’s really hard to take your ball off-line with this shaft.
That will be a good thing for most players as most of us need help keeping the ball on the fairway. While better players might rue the lack of workability, the Project X 6.5 gives you great distance thanks to low launch and spin while keeping your ball straight. Your mis-hits are also not punished with severe hooks or draws.
As we touched on before, the Project X 6.5 shaft has a stiff tip and butt section for uniform control. With midsection flex is somewhat determined by the iron you’re playing but you still get really good energy transfer so you can load up at will.
Why is Project X 6.5 So Popular?
Again, one of the reasons people like this shaft is that it comes in a variety of weight and flex options.
Apart from the Project X 6.5, you can also choose from 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0 flexes.
People have also mentioned that they like the Project X 6.5 shaft because it has a stout feel. So if that’s the kind of profile you like from your shaft, then the Project X 6.5 will surely make a fan out of you.
How Does the Project X 6.5 Perform?
As advertised, the Project X 6.5 provides low spin and low launch.
If you play in an area that sees high winds, you’re going to like this shaft. It will definitely help you keep the ball out of high winds and rewards faster swingers with more distance.
Our only problem with the Project X 6.5 came from long approaches. Makeable par 5’s were made a little less makeable due to the roll that this shaft generates. It’s harder to land fast greens from distance because of the low launch and spin.
However, if you’re adept at working the ball or if your irons are strong-lofted, you may not have this same issue.
