Nippon Modus 105 Vs Project X 5.5 Shaft Comparison
Find out which mid-weight steel iron shaft came out in our comparison of the Project X 5.5 and the Nippon Modus 105.
Nippon Modus 105 Shaft Overview
“The Modus 105 comes in regular (103g), stiff (106.5g) and extra stiff (112g) flex.”
I used extra stiff to keep the comparison fair. The Modus 105 produced surprisingly high launch.
But I found that I could work the ball down a bit once I got into a groove with this shaft.
There is definitely activity in this shaft; but it feels like the whole shaft flexes in unison giving it a fluid, smooth feel.
Project X 5.5 Shaft Overview
“The Project X 5.5 is a regular flex shaft that weighs 115g.”
The extra 3 grams of weight makes a noticeable difference. The kick point is very well-hidden so the Project X 5.5 can stand up to really aggressive tempos even at 115 grams.
It didn’t feel as smooth as the Modus 105; but it did produce tighter dispersion for me.
“It’s hard to top the feel of the Nippon Modus 105. Even though the higher launch doesn’t really fit me, the inviting smoothness through transition overshadowed the tighter dispersion of the Project X 5.5.”
Nippon Modus 105 First Impressions
The first thing that will strike most players is how consistent these lightweight shafts are.
The launch is no shocker; but the tight dispersion on all shots and even loading on all swings are what really stand out.
Key Features & Performance
The lightweight appointments are really what give this shaft its character.
It’s accessible and will help you improve your distance by about half a club.
Nippon Modus 105 Iron Review
Up to the 9-iron you get really strong trajectory and consistent spin/launch. It’s easy to get the ball in the air and you get a very smooth transition.
Nippon Modus 105 Wedge Review
The spin and launch really come in handy when you’re playing from a tight lie but still want to be aggressive.
Project X 5.5 First Impressions
At first, we thought the Project X 5.5 felt a little stout. However, when we paired them with our irons, they let up a bit as we worked down the set.
Key Features & Performance
The most important feature is easily the tapered tip. The tapered area runs longer for enhanced energy transfer from your swing to the ball.
Project X 5.5 Wedges Review
A great choice for wedges because the Project X 5.5 will afford you more accuracy where you need it the most: around the green.
Project X 5.5 Irons Review
We would recommend fitting all of your irons with the Project X 5.5 shaft. The progressive kick point will appeal to better players who will feel the load shift throughout the set.
Project X 5.5 Driver Review
If you are a faster swinger, you will want a stiffer flex than the Project X 5.5 offers.
