Oban CT 100 Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight
Oban may not be as popular as Fujikura; but you would be remiss if you don’t at least get a fitting for their CT shafts.
If you are in the market for steel iron shafts then you absolutely have to check out the Oban CT 100’s.
Without giving too much away in the intro of this review, we really like the Oban CT 100’s for slower swing speed players.
But what exactly makes these shafts a good fit for this class of golfers? Find out by reading on!
Oban CT 100 Shaft Overview
The Oban CT 100 shaft is pretty much as close to a graphite shaft as you can get without actually being a graphite shaft.
In terms of looks, there is nothing special here – it’s a standard stepped steel shaft. But the feel is where Oban seemingly put all of their R&D effort.
The shaft has a slightly active feel. The kick is definitely in the midsection and while it is distinct, it isn’t wild.
We mentioned in the intro that the Oban CT 100 is great for slower swingers and we did so for a reason: the Oban CT 100 will certainly feel too whippy for 95+ MPH swingers.
There is simply too much give and too much activity in the midsection – especially if you’re a strong swinger who is used to playing steel iron shafts. But that’s not who this shaft is for.
The Oban CT 100 has an active feel but for deliberate-tempo players, it will feel familiar and certainly help with club head speed.
If you aren’t swinging out of your shoes, you will be able to keep track of the club head and enjoy a very smooth transition.
The release on this shaft is perfect for slow to moderate swingers – it’s smooth, controlled and most importantly, won’t send shockwaves up your arm on mis-hits.
The feedback is clear but at no point during our testing did we feel that the Oban CT 100 was harsh in any way.
For some of us, if we were blindfolded and swung with the Oban CT 100, we might have guessed that the Oban CT 100 was a graphite shaft.
Why is the Oban CT 100 So Popular?
The Oban CT 100 is a popular choice among slower swing speed players who still want the accuracy of steel iron shafts.
It strikes a terrific balance between control and feel. Dispersion is surprisingly tight for a shaft in this weight class which makes it a great option for mid to high handicappers.
How Does the Oban CT 100 Perform?
As much as we loved the feel of this shaft, we were more impressed with how it performed.
For our higher handicap testers, the Oban CT 100 provided exceptionally tight grouping – almost all on the green too.
Dispersion was very tight and for the most part, we were able to produce high draws that veered back on-line consistently. In fact, we were never more than 10 yards off-line throughout our test session.
The Oban CT 100 shaft isn;t the longest steel shaft on the market by any means. But it is one of the most accurate in its weight class.
Spin rates were lower than usual for most of our testers but still high enough to hold greens. The Oban CT 100 has a stiff tip profile which explains two things.
Firstly, it explains why all of the action seems to be relegated in the midsection. Secondly, and most important, it explains why we were keeping the ball so straight.
The firmer tip allows this light shaft to be forgiving while at the same time correcting face angle at impact.
