Oban CT 115 Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Oban CT 115 Shaft

Oban is known for their high-quality graphite shafts.

So when it came time to test out one of their steel shafts, we had our reservations.

While Oban isn’t a wildly popular shaft brand in the states, some of our testers have been enamored with the company’s graphite shafts. In fact, some of our testers game their graphite shafts.

To be quite honest, we kept our expectations for their steel shafts pretty low. That’s why we chose to test the Oban CT 115 specifically.

This is their mid-tier steel shaft – the one that goes between the lighter CT 100 and the heavier CT 125.

We figured the Oban CT 115 would be a nice middle-ground and give us an accurate idea of what the entire line has to offer.

In the following review, you will read about our experience testing the Oban CT 115.

Oban CT 115 Shaft Overview

As previously stated, the Oban CT 115 goes between the Oban CT 100 and the Oban CT 125 in terms of weight and rigidity.

It is advertised as providing a mid/high launch with low/mid spin. This is a stepped, steel shaft and there is very little to differentiate it from your normal, off-the-shelf stepped steel iron shaft.

In fact the only way to know that it’s an Oban shaft is the “Oban” logo that resides just under the grip.

So as far as looks, the Oban CT 115 is nothing to write home about. But the feel is where the Oban CT 115 shines. The Oban CT 115 is exceptionally smooth.

Even our testers who game graphite irons shafts said that the Oban CT 115 felt comfortable and familiar.

The transition is near-seamless and you never lose track of the club head. The Oban CT 115 strikes a very rare balance of stability and comfort.

If you have never played a steel iron shaft for fear that it would feel too stiff or send shockwaves up your arms on mis-hits, you need to try the Oban CT 115.

We can imagine that the Oban CT 125 would actually feel a bit boardy because the Oban CT 115 is borderline stout.

There is a very muted kick but you can still feel it in the midsection when you really load up. The release is nearly undetectable though.

Why is the Oban CT 115 So Popular?

Of all the Oban CT shafts, we can see why the Oban CT 115 is the most popular.

It strikes a perfect balance between feel and performance. You will feel like you’re playing a lighter, possibly even graphite shaft. But the accuracy is more indicative of a steel shaft.

How Does the Oban CT 115  Perform?

We’re going to gush about the performance of this shaft a lot in this section so it is probably appropriate to start out with one of the only weaknesses of this shaft: distance.

Distance can be a deal-breaker for some players so it’s definitely something to consider. The Oban CT 115 doesn’t seem to have been made for distance.

That’s not to say that it plays short; we just mean that in our testing session, none of us saw more than a 4-yard gain in carry.

Now onto the good stuff. Our grouping was stupendous with this shaft. None of our balls landed more than 5 yards away from each other.

Dispersion was almost effortlessly tight and the spin rates were right where they should be. With the 7-iron, we were able to stay on greens without any rollout and without the ball spinning back.

Our better testers were able to flight the ball high or launch it low as needed. On mis-hits, we weren’t seeing insane amounts of sidespin.

While severe mis-hits did produce some pulls, they would have been a lot worse with more stubborn, stouter steel iron shafts for sure.

Our first impression was that the Oban CT 115 didn’t feel like your typical steel shaft.

Key Features & Performance

All we’re told about the tech is that the Oban CT 115 is made with “Mid-weight Japanese steel.”

For whatever that actually means, we know that the Oban CT 115 rewards a moderate tempo but can keep up with more aggressive swings.

Who Should Buy it?

We were very tempted to give this shaft a 98 rating but the distance held it back.

In every other respect though, this is a fantastic shaft. We think it would be particularly great for players making the leap from graphite shafts to steel shafts.

It also works stupendously well with a moderate tempo.
