Project X Cypher Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight
Lightweight shafts are always tricky.
They are better for players with slow to moderate swing speeds; but they often lack control and balance. Still, the reality for a lot of us is that we simply can’t use heavier, stout shafts because of our swing tendencies.
Thankfully though, there are a lot of options for those of us whose names aren’t Bryson DeChambeau. But even if a shaft is light, it doesn’t mean that it will be the right fit for your driver and fairway woods. Today we will be taking an in-depth look at the Project X Cypher.
Just by reading the spec notes on this shaft, you can tell that it will be lightweight and generally easy to manage. But again, these kinds of shafts can hide a dark, inaccurate underbelly that will do more to detriment your drives than help them. Will the Project X Cypher be a good fit for you? Find out in the following review.
Project X Cypher Overview
The Project X Cypher shaft comes in a wide range of weights but the heaviest version tops out at 74 grams.
This tells us that the Project X Cypher line was not meant for heavy hitters. Instead, the Project X Cypher is targeted at slower swing speed players who want help with distance.
When we tested the Project X Cypher, we used the 60 gram version in 5.0 Flex. This is equivalent to regular flex and 60 grams is pretty light. We wanted to see if a lighter version would maintain stability as our testing staff runs the gamut from moderate to fast swing speeds.
Right off the bat, we could feel that the Project X Cypher has a surprisingly stable mid-section. There is definitely a kick point that you can feel; but it doesn’t resonate through the entire shaft. Instead, you get a bit of release from the tip section but really good balance throughout the rest of the shaft.
Another interesting thing to note about the Project X Cypher shaft is that it is available for woods and irons. The concept behind this variety is that a player can score lower by having more consistency throughout their bag. We didn’t test the Project X Cypher with our irons – just our fairways and drivers.
Why is the Project X Cypher So Popular?
We can’t speak for other golfers but for us, we really liked the smooth feel of the Project X Cypher.
The mid-section feels really stable even when you load up on a swing. So the consistency is there and you get a mild kick lower on the shaft. This all equates to a smooth-feeling shaft with mild activity that you can predict with pretty much every type of swing.
How Does the Project X Cypher Perform?
We were really surprised to see that such a lightweight shaft produced such low spin rates.
On average, the spin rates we were seeing from the Project X Cypher were in the 1900 RPM range. For our testing session, this meant good flight consistency; but lower than expected launch.
Still, we really liked that the Project X Cypher produced straight shots. It was very easy to find the fairway with this shaft; but don’t expect much in terms of roll out distance. The launch is natural mid-low unless you have a really low CG driver head that makes it really easy to get under the ball. In that case, you are likely to get optimal launch angles with the Project X Cypher shaft.
But the name of the game in terms of performance is consistency. We were delighted to see that the Project X Cypher kept us on the short grass even with mis-hits. The mid-section stability really comes through when you need it – in other words, it will cover up a lot of your mis-hits.
