True Temper AMT Black Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Most of us consider True Temper Dynamic Gold shafts to be the quality standard for irons.

And while Dynamic Gold has proven itself on the Tour and among amateur golfers, it’s not the only game in town. Case in point: the True Temper AMT Black.

In terms of weight, the True Temper AMT Black sits in the center of the AMT family. “AMT” stands for Ascending Mass Technology which is a fancy way of saying that the weight of these shafts is progressive.

You get a lighter feel and less mass in the long iron shafts and more weight and a stouter feel from the short iron shafts. While that’s a pretty standard feature for iron shafts, there is more than meets the eye with the True Temper AMT Black. Take a look at the following review to find out what you really need to know about the True Temper AMT Black.

True Temper AMT Black Overview

According to True Temper, the True Temper AMT Black was made for moderate tempo players who want controlled launch and moderate spin rates.

The weight class for the True Temper AMT Black series tops out at 116 grams so it’s clear that this line was indeed meant for medium swing speed players.

Something that we really liked was that the Ascending Mass Technology seemed to actually make a difference. Based on our testing, the “AMT” moniker isn’t just about branding and marketing – you actually get controlled spin rates from your long irons and good stopping power in the short irons.

The whole set blends together seamlessly and provides good consistency as well. The entire set gets heavier in increments of 3 grams. So you’re not shocked when you pull out your 9-iron after having bombed the ball down the fairway with your 4-iron.

The trajectory is relatively flat with a nice, controlled launch. And as you can imagine, with the ascending weight comes ascending spin rates. You get good spin profiles from the shorter irons and the longer irons maintain lower spin rates to help with distance.

Why is the True Temper AMT Black So Popular?

We suspect that the True Temper AMT Black benefits from the popularity of the Dynamic Gold series.

Still, the True Temper AMT Black is a great shaft for those who want the Dynamic Gold smoothness in a more accessible package.

How Does the True Temper AMT Black Perform?

The True Temper AMT Black allows you to take your regular swing while your iron head does most of the work.

It works really well if you have a sweeping swing and it provides the consistency of the Dynamic Gold series.

The True Temper AMT Black produces a mid-high launch and moderate spin in the long irons. In the short irons, you see a noticeable pickup in the spin rates which really helps you bite onto fast greens. We also really liked the looks of these irons: a simple chrome finish with black lettering.

The carry distances we were getting with the long irons was really impressive. The muted spin allows for significantly improved hang time. We also noted that the True Temper AMT Black shafts helped with swing speed in the long irons. The True Temper AMT Black shaft allows you to take your normal swing and produce better club head speeds.
