Oban Revenge Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight
Oban shafts don’t get a lot of time in the limelight.
They are not the stock shaft choice for any of the major golf club manufacturers and they are not super-prevalent on the pro Tour.
But one thing we really like about this company is that they make a lot of unique-feeling shafts for a very wide variety of players.
No matter what your skill-level is, you will likely find an Oban shaft that fits you well. In the following review, we will be taking a look at the Oban Revenge.
Funny name, I know and to be honest, I still don’t know why they call it that.
But the Oban Revenge may be the shaft you have been searching for if you have a deliberate tempo and moderate swing speed.
Oban Revenge Shaft Overview
It seems that Oban shafts always give me reason to chuckle.
Whether it’s the Karate guy delivering a high kick on the Oban Devotion HB shaft or inexplicable nomenclature, something always tickles me about these shafts and the Oban Revenge is no different.
You think “revenge” and aggressive colors come to mind – maybe black and red. And while the “Revenge” lettering on this shaft is delivered in an aggressive font, that’s the only thing that looks aggressive about it.
The Oban Revenge has a totally non-threatening green, almost emerald finish. It doesn’t look bad at all; it just doesn’t match the name.
The Oban Revenge was designed with a soft tip and butt section. The midsection is the only part of the shaft that feels stiff and this creates a noticeable effect on spin and launch.
The softer tip allows for high launch and high spin.
While Oban states that the Oban Revenge is a mid, low-mid, and mid-high shaft (depending on the weight), I would say that for the most part, this is a high-launch shaft.
Even with the 85g weight class in extra stiff flex, the Oban Revenge still delivers a middle launch.
The feel of this shaft is responsive. You can feel the club head follow through the intended path.
And while it does feel a bit whippy on powerful swings, we suspect that the Oban Revenge wasn’t really intended for powerful swingers.
Why is the Oban Revenge So Popular?
The Oban Revenge can do a lot for you if you are naturally a low-spin swinger with your driver or woods.
My spin rates were effortlessly increased with this shaft which meant better stopping power on the green.
How Does the Oban Revenge Perform?
To give you an idea of just how high this shaft wants to launch, our average launch angle turned out to be 16.7°.
Descent angles were similarly steep and for the most part, we had no problem with that. The higher launch increased carry distance for most of us who have trouble getting the ball in the air.
Spin rates were consistently in the 2800 RPM range as well.
The Oban Revenge 85 might feel more comfortable for quick tempo swingers; but there is still a sort of whippy feeling you get low on the shaft.
Instead, the Oban Revenge performs best for low-launch/low-spin players with a deliberate tempo.
It doesn’t take much to activate this shaft which means that if you have an aggressive tempo, you will likely lose club head control.
But on a controlled, smooth tempo, the Oban Revenge remains in check and delivers a satisfyingly responsive feel.
You get the sense that the shaft is really working with you by delivering more of your swing energy to the ball.
Our only real gripe about the Oban Revenge – even for deliberate tempo players – is that sidespin is also high. The dispersion during our testing frequently veered north of 17 yards.
