Oban Devotion Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight
The Oban Devotion shaft comes in a slew of different flexes and weight classes.
So really there may be something here for every type of golfer. There are five different weight classes but for this particular review, we are going right down the middle of the road.
We decided to test the Oban Devotion 65 in stiff flex (67 grams). Will this relatively obscure shaft brand hold any benefits for you? Find out in the following Oban Devotion shaft review.
Oban Devotion Shaft Overview
The main draw of the Oban Devotion shaft is that it comes in weights and flexes for every swing speed.
There is a 45g class for slow swingers and an 85g class for powerful swingers. The Oban Devotion is a graphite shaft that has a stiff tip section. The midsection lets up a bit (about mid stiffness we would say) and the butt section is the softest.
As a result, you can feel most of the action in the high midsection just below the grip. The transition is quite smooth and the kick is very controlled. With the stiff tip section, you get good club head control. It’s very easy to follow the correct club path even on 110% swings.
The color is a bit loud for our taste. Most of the shaft is adorned with a royal blue finish with swirling designs in the butt section that yields to bands of gold where the lettering and logos are confined. The tip section has a simple, solid royal blue finish.
The Oban Devotion 65 has a firm bend profile but you can pick up the 45g or 55g if you prefer a medium bend profile.
Why is the Oban Devotion So Popular?
While it may not be the most popular graphite driver shaft on the market, the Oban Devotion is generating a cult following because of its accessibility.
There are so many weights and flexes to choose from. If you are simply adamant about gaming one of these shafts, your fitter will have no problem setting you up with the right one.
How Does the Oban Devotion Perform?
Right away, our better testers loved the fact that the Oban Devotion (65) produced low launch and low spin rates.
The spin rates lived in the 1800 – 1900 RPM range for the duration of our testing. Our testers also remarked that the Oban Devotion kept up with their most powerful swings.
Even when we swung out of our shoes, the driver head stayed on a straight path and our face angles were near spot-on. You don’t get a ton of activity; but the activity that can be felt is just below the grip. The Oban Devotion 65 has a 3.6 degree torque rating and that felt spot-on.
So how long did the Oban Devotion play? Our testers were averaging 264.2 yards of carry after three swings each. The only testers the Oban Devotion didn’t produce above average distance for were the slower swingers (75 – 80 MPH). For everyone else though, the Oban Devotion was producing knuckle balls swing after swing. This is a great distance shaft that feels light in the hands and responds well to powerful swings.
Of course, if you don’t have an aggressive tempo, there are always the 55 and 45-gram weight classes.
