Mitsubishi Bassara 50 Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight
The Mitsubishi Bassara 50 shaft may be something of a relic now in 2023.
As the name suggests, it is a very lightweight shaft that was made for slower swing speed players. And the reason we even use the word relic is not just because it is an older shaft; but also because the tech that went into it is rarely seen today.
But old doesn’t always mean bad. We were able to get our hands on a used Mitsubishi Bassara 50 in really good condition for testing. Does the Mitsubishi Bassara 50 have anything to offer in 2023? Let’s find out.
Mitsubishi Bassara 50 Shaft Overview
Even the graphics of the Mitsubishi Bassara 50 shaft are something of a blast from the past.
The shaft is adorned with what I can only describe as a tribal band design. The tribal band is red and white while the base color of the shaft is black. We wouldn’t say it’s a bad-looking shaft; but it does look a bit dated. I can’t help but think of all those tribal tattoos that were so popular in the 90’s when I look at this shaft.
Amazingly though, the graphics aren’t much of a distraction as much of the shaft is plain red or black. The Mitsubishi Bassara 50 was hyped as a high launch, low spin shaft and was always geared towards slower swing speed players. Indeed, when you first pick this shaft up, you can feel how light and fast it feels in your hands. The Mitsubishi Bassara 50 has a plainly active tip section with a stiffer but section.
Even the bend profile is unique when compared to modern graphite wood shafts. You can feel the action in the tip and a little less so in the midsection. And while it doesn’t take much to activate this shaft, there is still a sense of stability on impact. The head squares quickly and the shaft recovers quickly as well. And like nearly any Mitsubishi shaft we’ve tested, the Mitsubishi Bassara 50 feels very smooth. Even on strong loads and mis-hits, you don’t get a jolt up your arms.
Why is the Mitsubishi Bassara 50 So Popular?
The Mitsubishi Bassara 50 is a popular choice among senior players and slow swing speed players because it will actually get your swing speed up.
Our testers (mostly sub 85 MPH swingers) were seeing immediate increases in club head speed.
How Does the Mitsubishi Bassara 50 Perform?
We were amazed that the Mitsubishi Bassara 50 was able to live up to its promise of low spin considering how whippy the tip section felt.
After almost every swing, we thought the spin rates were going to be out of control. However, we could see by the flight that spin was at least kept in check. On pure strikes, we were seeing the ball arc high with a slight draw that veered back on-line very nicely and stably.
If there was uncontrolled sidespin at play, that nice shape would not be possible. What’s more is that we were affecting a wide draw consistently. On mis-hits, the draw got wider and the dispersion was a little wider as well; but that’s a lot better than a straight up push. For the most part the Mitsubishi Bassara 50 stayed within the 2100-2300 RPM spin rate range from the tee. And as promised, launch was high so we were getting nice, soft landings.
Our only real gripe about the Mitsubishi Bassara 50 was that the feedback was lacking. It was hard for us to tell what kind of flight we were going to get by feel alone. Where we made contact on the face was a mystery until we looked at the flight or the launch monitor data. However, the lack of feel may have been due to the shaft/driver head combo we were using – we’re not used to testing such light shafts.
