Autoflex Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Autoflex Shaft

It can be argued that the top golf club shaft manufacturers (True Temper, KBS, etc.) have a stranglehold on the industry.

It’s hard to remember the last time an upstart company has really made any noise in the shaft industry.

But that is exactly what Autoflex is doing. Most of the hype surrounding this company and its shafts has been generated online.

But there have been real-world validations for their shafts. To be specific, high-profile pros like Adam Scott have actually used Autoflex shafts in tournament play.

We have never played or tested an Autoflex flex shaft so we were very excited for this particular review. Today, we will be telling you about our experience testing the Autoflex shaft.

Autoflex Shaft Overview

The first thing you need to know about Autoflex is that they make all kinds of shafts.

You can pick up an Autoflex shaft for your driver, fairway woods, irons and they also make utility shafts.

For this specific review, we will be focusing on the Autoflex SF505X which is a driver shaft. The Autoflex SF505X is a very lightweight shaft at just 55 grams.

But you should also know that they make even lighter driver shafts (as light as 41 grams).

The Autoflex shaft was designed for slower swing speed players. If you can’t seem to wield a mid/heavyweight driver shaft effectively, the Autoflex shafts are definitely worth a look.

The Autoflex Sf505X shaft feels very fast and manageable. There is definitely activity in the midsection whether you stand on it or are swinging well within yourself.

The Autoflex shafts come in a couple of different finishes. The aesthetics of these shafts aren’t exactly to our liking; but if you’re trying to turn heads at the range, the Autoflex shafts will get the job done.

They offer their shafts in a rainbow finish or a black/pink color scheme. You get the sense that Autoflex really wants to set themselves apart and build a recognizable brand.

Why is the Autoflex Shaft So Popular?

While they can’t claim the kind of market share that True Temper or Project X has, Autoflex is slowly gaining in popularity.

They are a hit among beginners and slow swingers because all of their shafts are exceptionally lightweight.

How Does the Autoflex Shaft Perform?

One of the major selling points behind the Autoflex driver shaft is that it will increase your club head and ball speed.

We’re happy to report that this claim is absolutely true. Our testers were seeing club head speeds between 111 and 115 MPH on a consistent basis during testing.

Most of the time, this meant better ball speed and more distance. There is a caveat though.

Not all swings with the Autoflex resulted in longer carry distance. That’s because when you really load up on the shaft, it flexes quite a bit.

Sometimes the considerable flex led to a loss in club head control. In other words, it was a lot easier to mis-hit when we were swinging outside of ourselves.

While the club head speed/stability tradeoff was easily predictable for this lightweight shaft, it is something that all players should be aware of.

Still, our carry distance was good more often than not. Our testers were averaging carry distance of 258.9 yards after three swings apiece with this shaft.

The spin rates were surprisingly low. We were expecting rates in the 2500 RPM range but we were pleased to see that the Autoflex stayed between 2200 and 2300 for the duration of our testing.

As you can imagine, shot dispersion wasn’t the best. It was absolutely tolerable; just not as tight as you would see from heavier graphite shafts.

Launch was mid/high and could be worked depending on your swing.

Autoflex Shaft Specs

Specs Autoflex (Driver)
Weight 41g, 45g, 50g, 55g, 57g

What Flexes Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

Regular and stiff flex Autoflex shafts would be good for players in the 75 – 85 MPH swing speed range.

The extra stiff shafts are better for 85+ MPH swingers.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

If you are swinging at or below 75 MPH, the 40g weight class would be best for you.

80+ MPH swingers would probably do better with the 50g weight class.

Why is it So Good?

Autoflex Shaft1

We can understand how some players would look at the Autoflex shafts as gimmicky.

But the “gimmick” is also what makes these shafts good. The gimmick is that they are extremely lightweight which is what is drawing more and more players.

The colors are what stand out initially.

The Autoflex SF505x has a bright pink finish that makes it stand out in the bag and behind the ball.

Key Features & Performance

Part of what makes this shaft so light is that it is made with very thin walls.

This creates a lot of mass savings which in turn, makes it easy to swing this shaft.

Autoflex Driver Review

We recommend pairing the Autoflex driver shaft with a lightweight driver head as high swing weight heads will result in more instability.

Autoflex Fairway Wood Review

The Autoflex fairway shafts have a very active profile. A smoother transition will result in optimal smash factor and distance.

Who Should Buy it?

The Autoflex driver shafts should be reserved for beginners and high handicappers.

In particular, beginners and high handicappers with deliberate tempos.

We definitely noticed that the Autoflex shaft lost a lot of stability when we put 110% into our swings and released aggressively.

However, if you keep things smooth you will be rewarded with great carry distance and improved smash factor.
