Ping G430 Vs Callaway Big Bertha BB23 Hybrid Comparison Overview

The Callaway Big Bertha BB23 Hybrid and the Ping G430 hybrid represent some of the latest tech innovations from both companies.

For Callaway, it’s the AI design and new batwing jailbreak bracing that stiffens the perimeter of the face while increasing face flexion.

For Ping, the G430 hybrid embodies facewrap and “spinsistency” technology that protect launch and spin on mis-hits. So which modern hybrid is more effective and who might they be for? Read on to find out!

Ping G430 Hybrid Overview

“The Ping G430 also features a carbon fiber crown panel to help lighten the head and lower the CG.”

But even with the low CG, we found that the Ping G430 hybrid launched significantly lower than the BB23.  The distance we were getting from the G430 was amazing and it was mostly due to stronger loft and hot launch. The maraging steel face construction must have something to do with the ball speeds because  the ball felt like a rocket on almost every swing.

In fact, we could feel the quick compression of the ball against the face. Feedback was tremendous and spin rates were optimal: not too high, not too low. With the mid-spin we were getting, we were able to hold fast greens and keep rollout from dooming us on doglegs. Overall, the G430 brings great accuracy and distance to the table.

Callaway Big Bertha BB23 Hybrid Overview

“With the BB23 hybrid, you lose some of that hot launch and feedback; but you gain a ton of forgiveness.”

The BB23 has a larger footprint and is longer from heel to toe than the G430. So there is simply more sweet spot at your disposal. There is also more offset which makes it easier to correct that hook or slice.

The batwing jailbreak bracing seems to preserve ball speed on perimeter mis-hits as well.  The BB23 played slightly longer than the G430; but only for our slower swing speed testers. For the rest of us, the G430 hybrid produced more distance.

“In our opinion the technologies that went into these hybrids are equally effective for their respective clubs. For the Ping G430 hybrid, the tech creates optimal launch and spin conditions for faster swingers to hold greens and gain distance. For the Callaway Big Bertha BB23 Hybrid, design innovations maximize forgiveness and make it so higher handicappers stay on the fairway and slower swingers get the distance they need.”

The BB23 hybrids get the ball up in the air in a hurry and are incredibly forgiving.

Ping G430 Hybrid – First Impressions

“At first, we were a bit concerned about the sole design and leading edge of the Ping G430 hybrids.”

And as it turns out, we had a right to be concerned. The leading edge of these hybrids isn’t as smooth as you would hope for a hybrid. Turf interaction was a bit harsh; but they launch high enough for better players to attack the pin from pretty much any lie.

Ping G430 Hybrid Family

“You can use the Ping G430 hybrids to replace almost any iron or fairway wood in your bag.”

They range from #2 to #7 and they all have a D1 swing weight. The Ping G430 family of hybrids can even replace your shorter fairway woods and yield the same distance. All of the hybrids in the Ping G430 line come with the same features such as carbon composite crowns, C300 maraging steel faces and Facewrap technology.

“At a glance, it’s easy to tell that Callaway doubled down on the forgiveness factor of the Big Bertha line with the Callaway Big Bertha BB23 hybrids.”

The footprint is surely the first thing that any player will notice about these hybrids. They certainly live up to the Big Bertha name by being beefy and confidence-inspiring behind the ball.

When we first started our test session, we were very impressed with how easily these clubs got the ball up in the air.
