PXG 0311 Black Ops Hybrid Review – Is it Good & Forgiving for High Handicappers?

While the new PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrids have almost identical features as the PXG 0311 Black Ops fairway woods, they are a departure from past hybrid models.

The slight shift in design seems to suggest that PXG has gone all-in on forgiveness.

But is the PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid really a good option for high handicappers? I tested and reviewed it to find out.

Is it Good for High Handicappers?

“The PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid looks forgiving at first glance.”

Or at least, more forgiving than past PXG hybrids. That’s simply because the new PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid is larger than previous models.

The PXG 0311 Black Ops also has a squared face which makes the outside skirt more vertical in profile.

PXG says that this design increases the hitting surface area for added forgiveness.

Along with the bigger head and squared face, the PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid features three interchangeable weight ports, extreme perimeter weighting and a carbon fiber crown.

All of these features work together to create what is possibly PXG’s most high-handicapper-friendly hybrid yet.

Is it Forgiving?

“The PXG 0311 Black Ops also features a proprietary AM355 steel head.”

PXG claims that this steel is super-strong and super-thin which allows for more mass to be shifted low and to the perimeter.

In fact, the perimeter weights are actually anchored to the outside walls of the head – so this is as “perimeter” as perimeter weighting gets.

If you measure forgiveness by how easy it is to keep dispersion tight, then the PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid is incredibly forgiving.

Like the other PXG 0311 Black Ops woods, the hybrid remains incredibly stable on mis-hits, resists twisting and yields near-effortless straight flight.

How Does the PXG 0311 Black Ops Hybrid Look?

“I could tell right away that the PXG 0311 Black Ops was bigger than past PXG hybrids.”

It’s not humongous; but it is noticeably bigger. And the square face profile leaves no question that this is indeed a hybrid.

The carbon fiber crown has a glossy finish which makes it stand out against most other modern woods that feature matte crowns.

The three weight ports on the sole are a bit bunched together giving it a busy look.

Overall though the PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid looks forgiving and confidence-inspiring.

Difference Between PXG 0311 Black Ops and PXG 0311 Gen6 Hybrid

“The main difference is that the GEN6 hybrid has an adjustable hosel.”

The PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid has a standard glued hosel.

Another difference is that the standard weight configuration for the GEN6 is two 2.5g weights up front and a 10.5g weight in the back.

The PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid’s standard weight configuration is two 2.5g weight up front and a 12.5g weight in the back.
