Lazarus Golf Irons Review – How Good Are They Vs Alternatives? – Are They Good for High Handicappers & Forgiving?

Lazrus golf clubs are affordable partly because they sell directly to consumers and cut out the retail middle man. Their irons have been hailed by some as one of the best values in golf.

“But can a complete set of irons that sells for under $350 really be worth it?”

In the past we’ve reviewed Lazrus hybrids and we’ve finally gotten around to testing the Lazrus Golf irons. The set can come in various configurations including 2-PW, 4-PW, 7-PW, 2-6, 1-2-3 and 2-3. So you can choose from a complete package, a long iron package or a short iron package.

Lazarus Irons also come in right or left-handed but you are relegated to regular flex if you stick with the stock shafts. In the following review, we will be comparing the Lazarus Irons to some more expensive irons from better-known manufacturers. I will also be offering my honest insight into these irons after having tested them.

Lazarus Irons Vs Taylormade Stealth Irons

“The Taylormade Stealth irons offer really good mis-hit coverage out near the toe.”

And unlike the traditional cavity back of the Lazarus Irons, the Stealth irons feature a Cap Back design where the cavity is, for the most part, filled with a badge that helps dampen vibrations.

Overall, the Stealth irons felt softer at impact and smoother through transition. They were also more forgiving than Lazarus Irons on toe-side misses. But it was easier for me and most of the members of our testing crew to get the Lazarus Irons up in the air.

On the turf interaction front though, we found the Stealth irons to perform a bit better. It was very easy for me to leave bigger divots behind with the Lazarus Irons.

Lazarus Irons Vs Callaway Big Bertha Irons

“The Big Bertha irons have a substantial profile.”

And while the Lazarus Irons are by no means butter knives, the Big Bertha makes them look tiny by comparison. The Big Bertha irons give you plenty of sweet spot to work with but were honestly not very much more forgiving than the Lazarus Irons.

You can feel how stable the Big Bertha irons are with the precision tungsten weight placement. A solid, stable feel is something I would say that the Lazarus Irons lack so that’s definitely a point in favor of the Big Berthas.

However, the significantly higher price tag of the Big Bertha irons doesn’t justify its narrowly superior performance. The Lazarus Irons are nearly as forgiving and yielded similar distance in our test session.

Are the Lazarus Irons Clones?

“While speculation abounds as to whether some of Lazzrus Golf’s other clubs are clones, their irons are pretty much all their own.”

We can’t see the Lazarus Irons being clear clones of any other iron set and it doesn’t seem like anyone is making that claim. While they have common game improvement iron features, they appear to be made independent of any other design plan.

Key Features

Stepped Steel Shafts

The stock Lazarus Iron shaft is a very traditional steel, stepped shaft. It comes in regular flex and offers excellent accuracy for a club head of this size. The shaft lengths range from 35.5” (PW) to 40” (1-iron).

Cavity Back Design

The Lazarus Irons feature a traditional cavity back design with a nice, deep undercut. The undercut juts out a bit behind the head but not so much that it’s distracting. The cavity back and undercut increase MOI and make it so that the launch is actually workable – it was mid/high for most of our test session.

Aggressive Grooves

One thing most of us were surprised about were the aggressive grooves these irons have. We were getting great spin control from the short irons and more than adequate stopping power from the long irons.

Are They Good for High Handicappers?

“The Lazarus Irons have plenty of offset and the mass is distributed with a slight toe bias.”

The offset makes it easy to square up to the ball and the little extra bit of  toe mass straightens out mis-hits very well. In fact, the only types of contact that produced wide divergence and significant loss of ball speed were deep heel mis-hits.

I would say this is a great set of irons for high handicappers. They look very assuring at address and it was very easy for me to fall into a groove with them.

Available Shafts

“At the time I wrote this review up, there was only one shaft option.”

And that was a plain, steel shaft in regular flex. However, these irons are available in RH and LH save for the 1-iron which is only available as a right-handed club.

Are the Lazarus Irons Worth it?

“The Lazarus Irons stand up to more expensive game improvement irons.”

It’s hard to argue with price; but impossible to argue with performance. I was able to squeeze 158 yards out of the Lazrus 9-iron and 204 yards out of the 6-iron. And to think that I was able to get this kind of distance out of a sub $350 set is insane. In my book, the Lazarus Irons are definitely worth it.

Lazarus Irons – First Impressions

“Right away, I could tell that these irons were going to be forgiving.”

They have a medium profile but a long heel to toe length. The cavity undercut is deep too so the low-face stability was very good.

Who Are the Lazarus Irons for?

“The Lazarus Irons are excellent for beginner and high handicappers.”

There isn’t a ton of workability in these irons and the feel won’t appeal to more discerning golfers. But they offer the forgiveness and distance that build a solid foundation for beginners and high handicappers.

Distance: 98/100

Accuracy: 96/100

Forgiveness: 96/100

Overall Score: 96/100
