Titleist TS2 Driver Review – Is it Good for High Handicappers & Forgiving?

TS2 driver

“The Titleist TS2 driver sees the company head into a totally different direction.

Not only does the Titleist TS2 driver emphasize speed above all else, it is also one of the most forgiving Titleist drivers we have ever tested.”

The TS line of drivers has something for everyone but the one constant among them is speed. The Titleist TS2, and all other TS drivers, were designed to increase club head and ball speed.

When you look at the Titleist TS2, you can certainly tell that it at least looks fast. The head is very sleek and the lines look very aerodynamic.

But it’s one thing to look fast and quite another to actually be fast. And what else, if anything, does the Titleist TS2 bring to the table besides speed and forgiveness? Read on to find out!

The Titleist TS Driver Family

“If you don’t need such a high degree of forgiveness, you may want to check out the Titleist TS3.”

The Titleist TS3 driver has a more traditional shape than the Titleist TS2. And compared to the Titleist TS2, the TS3 produces lower spin numbers.

Overall, the TS3 does a better job of incorporating player’s performance elements into a driver that is still forgiving and viable for high handicappers.

Is it Good for High Handicappers?

“The Titleist TS2 driver has an elongated head shape which makes for easy launch.”

For most high handicappers, boosting launch will also boost carry distance. This was our experience at least.

Our high handicap testers said that the Titleist TS2 was easy to launch and produced consistently steep launch angles. This not only produced more carry; but it also helped us stay on the green.

Something to note about the stock shaft for the Titleist TS2 is that it is half an inch longer than other Titleist drivers at 45.5”.

We suspect that they made the stock shaft longer in order to promote that promised speed. Indeed, we were seeing 110 MPH club head speeds and our average ball speed was 159.7 MPH.

How much of that has to do with the longer shaft? How much of it has to do with the aerodynamic head shape? We really don’t know.

What we do know is that the Titleist TS2 driver lives up to the claims that it is an overall fast driver.

And not just fast for 95+ MPH swing speed players; fast for everyone. So if you’re a high handicapper concerned with distance, the Titleist TS2 is certainly a good driver.

The only thing we don’t like about the Titleist TS2 for high handicappers is the spin consistency.

Some of our testers were getting 2600 RPMs and some were producing spin rates in the 2100 RPM range.

And the only reason this matters for high handicappers is because when you launch the ball high, you want the spin to be low to optimize distance.

Inconsistent spin rates can take yards off your drive in these kinds of scenarios.

Is it Forgiving?

TS2 driver1

“Hitting the ball thin didn’t seem to hamper ball speed or carry distance.”

The same was true for heel and toe mis-hits. Titleist says that the Titleist TS2 was designed for players who use the entire driver face and we definitely found this to be the case in our testing.

You are going to play long on all but the most dire mis-hits. And even though Titleist sacrificed their fabled consistency, they succeeded in making a very forgiving driver.

Difference Between the Titleist TS2 and the TSR2 Driver

“The TSR2 doubles down on forgiveness.”

The TSR2 features an upgraded aerospace-grade titanium face. The face has also been milled to different thicknesses to help preserve ball speed on your bad mis-hits.

Spin is definitely more consistent in the TSR2 driver as well – one of the few major weaknesses of the Titleist TS2 driver.

You still get the SureFit adjustable hosel sleeve with the TSR2; but the CG has been moved forward to mute spin.

Is the Titleist TS2 Driver Worth it?

“The Titleist TS2 is absolutely worth it if your main concern as a high handicapper is drive distance.”

Our average carry distance after three swings each was 272.2 yards which really surprised us because in our experience, Titleist drivers aren’t the longest.

But the Titleist TS2 was flying as far as distance drivers from companies like Ping and Taylormade.

TS2 driver3

“The looks of the Titleist TS2 are commensurate with the claims of a speedy driver.”

Aside from the elongated head shape, we really like the looks of the Titleist TS2. It looks fast while retaining some classic Titleist design elements.

Who is the Titleist TS2 for?

TS2 driver

“The Titleist TS2 is perfect for players who want reliable, consistent distance.”

It’s not the most accurate driver and spin spikes may cause your ball to veer off-line more often than you would like to admit.

But your ball/club head speed will be consistently high which, more often than not, will result in improved carry.

The Titleist TS Family of Drivers

The Titleist TS4 Driver

The Titleist TS4 is the only member of the TS family to feature a 430cc head volume. This is the player’s performance member of the TS family and is definitely more for low handicappers.

The Titleist TS3 Driver

The TS3 has an adjustable weight that can be set in a draw, neutral or fade position. This is the most versatile driver in the TS line and would suit a wide swath of players.
