Titleist TSR2 Hybrid Review – Is it Forgiving & Good for High Handicappers?

“Prior to testing the Titleist TSR2 hybrid, I had very little experience with Titleist hybrids in general.”

To be honest, I was almost surprised that Titleist even makes hybrids. But in the modern age of evermore forgiving clubs, I really shouldn’t be surprised. Still, I wasn’t expecting very much from the Titleist TSR2.

I was expecting something that looked marvelous but something that wasn’t very forgiving. I was expecting advanced tech; but not something that was high handicap friendly. If you’re anything like me, what you read from here on out may surprise you.

Titleist TSR2 Hybrid Overview

“The Titleist TSR2 features an adjustable hosel that allows you to tweak the loft and the face angle.”

So right off the bat, you have a very versatile hybrid. The Titleist TSR2 also has a lower and deeper CG than previous models. The shape is both traditional and new. At address, the Titleist TSR2 has the wood-like, rounded head profile that their past hybrids have had.

I personally like this shaping a lot. It reminds me very much of a fairway wood and fills me with confidence at address. But the face profile has been altered quite a bit. The Titleist TSR2 blade length has been extended. The face profile is shallower which allows for an expanded face from heel to toe.

Lastly, the Titleist TSR2 features recessed sole pockets which essentially reduce the amount of surface area that makes contact with the turf.

Is the Titleist TSR2 Hybrid Forgiving?

“Titleist clubs aren’t exactly synonymous with forgiveness.”

But I was surprised by the performance of the Titleist TSR2 hybrid. The extended face really makes it forgiving – especially on toe-side mis-hits. Shots that should have sliced were flying straight. And pure strikes were turning into near-perfect draws.

While thin shots lose a significant amount of ball speed and trajectory, the Titleist TSR2 hybrid still offers ample lateral forgiveness.

But perhaps the funnest performance aspect as it pertains to forgiveness is the turf interaction. I’ll admit that when I first read about the “sole relief pockets” I thought it was kind of gimmicky. But they really do work.

The Titleist TSR2 feels really fast through heavy turf. Not only was I able to make clean contact with the ball in the cabbage: I didn’t feel like my club head speed was being hindered at all.

This may not sound amazing or particularly fun but if you find yourself in the rough a lot, you will love this feature.

Is the Titleist TSR2 Hybrid Good for Beginners & High Handicappers?

“The Titleist TSR2 hybrid looks really good at address and the squat profile really does increase forgiveness from heel to toe.”

But it is still fairly compact in the grand scheme of things. That is to say, I wouldn’t recommend it to pure beginners. 20-25 handicappers will likely be able to get good use out of the Titleist TSR2; but I would suggest something bigger for pure beginners.

Should You Buy the Titleist TSR2 Hybrid or the TSR1?

“If you are looking for more up and down forgiveness, the Titleist TSR1 hybrid may be more your speed.”

The Titleist TSR1 actually looks more like a fairway wood than the Titleist TSR2. It has a deeper face profile so thin shots aren’t punished so harshly. But it does lack the recessed sole pockets and I could actually feel that it was slower and more clunky through the turf than the Titleist TSR2.

Still, I would say the Titleist TSR1 hybrid is better if you are a 22+ handicapper. It is more inherently forgiving and it comes in higher-lofted versions.

In 20 Words or Less

“The Titleist TSR2 offers a good combination of shot shapeability and forgiveness with the added bonus of smooth turf interaction.”

Titleist TSR2 Hybrid First Impressions

“My first thought about the Titleist TSR2 hybrid was that it looked really clean.”

As usual, Titleist kept the design of the crown neat and tidy. All you see is a pleasing spherical shape and a single alignment marker. I also liked the rounded shape that leans towards a fairway wood aesthetic.

The Titleist TSR Hybrid Family

If you’re looking for more of a player’s look and more adjustability, check out the Titleist TSR3. The Titleist TSR3 is the only hybrid in the TSR line to feature an adjustable CG weight.

A single weight can be positioned to achieve a neutral, heel, toe, extreme heel or extreme toe center of gravity. The Titleist TSR3 also features the same adjustable hosel as the Titleist TSR2.

Compared to the TSR1 and TSR2 hybrids, the TSR3 has a more compact head shape. It doesn’t extend as far as the Titleist TSR2 so you get more of a large iron profile than a fairway wood profile.

As a result, the Titleist TSR3 is the most workable hybrid in the TSR family. I would definitely recommend it to mid and low handicappers.

Who is the Titleist TSR2 Hybrid for?

“Despite my preconceptions, testing the Titleist TSR2 hybrid proved that it is indeed a good club for high handicappers.”

I would say that as long as you’re in the 17-25 handicap range, you will get along well with this hybrid. I really liked that it covered up toe-side mis-hits which is probably the most common type of mis-hit for high handicappers.

The Titleist TSR2 hybrid is also easy to launch. I was achieving steep launch angles and correspondingly steep descent angles. As a result, I was able to stop the ball better on or at least near my target.

So if you are looking for a hybrid that will not only provide adequate forgiveness but  make you a better pin-hunter, the Titleist TSR2 would be a solid choice.
