Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Wood Review – Is it Good & Forgiving for High Handicappers?

Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Wood

“The Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Woods come in standard, Max and Tour versions.”

The latest line of fairway woods from Taylormade see the company doubling down on forgiveness.

And this makes sense since forgiving, GI woods have been the company’s bread and butter for quite some time now.

For this particular review we will be taking a detailed look at the standard Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood but we will also highlight the other versions in the new line as well.

Will the Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood be a good choice for you? Let’s find out.

The Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Wood Family

The standard Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood is what I tested for this review so let’s take a quick look at the  other two models:

  • Taylormade Qi10 Max Fairway Wood – As you can imagine, the Max version has a slightly enlarged face profile but with all the same features as the standard Taylormade Qi10.
  • Taylormade Qi10 Tour Fairway Wood – With a more compact head than the Max and standard versions comes more adjustability. The Taylormade Qi10 Tour is the only model that features a sliding CG weight and an adjustable hosel.

Is it Good for High Handicappers?

“The Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood features the V-steel sole, Speed Pocket and Twist Face technology.”

All of these features are designed to suit the accuracy needs of high handicappers.

The V-Steel sole feels really good off the deck and helps you get the height you need by drawing the CG down a bit.

The Speed Pocket will help preserve ball speed on your low-face mis-hits. The Twist Face technology helps reduce problematic face deflection that can result in cut spin.

In short, the Taylormade Qi10 fairway woods were made for high handicappers. And if I had to put a number on it, I would say it’s great for 18-26 handicappers.

Is it Forgiving?

“The Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood also has an infinity carbon crown.”

This feature essentially expands the hitting zone of the face. The infinity carbon crown sort of bleeds into the topline which expands the face and will really help you if you tend to dig.

It also makes it a bit easier to frame the ball at address and gives this club an overall forgiving look.

In terms of dispersion, an important factor when considering forgiveness, I liked what I was seeing from the Taylormade Qi10.

I was landing to the right and to the left of the target but the dispersion wasn’t wide – it never exceeded 11 yards.

Difference Between the Taylormade Qi10 and Taylormade Qi10 Tour Fairway Woods

“For sure, the biggest difference between the standard and Tour model is adjustability.”

The Taylormade Qi10 Tour has a sliding track weight and an adjustable hosel. The standard Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood has a glued (fixed) hosel and no sliding track weight that can help shape your shots.

Other than that, the Taylormade Qi10 Tour fairway wood is a bit more compact than the standard version and is aimed more towards faster swinging players.

Available Shaft

The standard Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood comes with a Fujikura Ventus TR Blue FW in stiff (63g), regular (62g) and amateur (61g) flex.

Is the Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Wood Worth it?

“The Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood is definitely worth it if you need to coax more accuracy from your woods.”

One of the things that really impressed me about the Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood (and other Taylormade Qi10 clubs I have tested so far) was the straight flight.

If you tend to miss out towards the toe, the Taylormade Qi10 will help you tremendously by eliminating the excess spin that usually sends your shots reeling off-line

“The Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood offers excellent lateral forgiveness, has a solid feel at impact and plays long.”

Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Wood – First Impressions

Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Wood4

“My first shot with the Taylormade Qi10 was a low-face hit but you couldn’t tell from the launch monitor data.”

That low face strike still ended up producing 149.7 MPH ball speed, 92 feet of height and kept the spin rate at 3200 RPMs. And as I got more used to swinging this fairway wood, those numbers only improved.

Now the overall launch of the Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood was pretty low for me which is what I like.

But I can see this being a problem for players who get most of their distance from hang time. Still, you can’t complain with tight dispersion, at least adequate distance and great ball speed.

Another thing I noticed almost immediately was the feel at impact. The Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood feels super solid – as if face deflection is kept at near non-existent levels.

As a result, ball flight was stable and consistent throughout my testing so long as I wasn’t hitting hosel rockets.

And while I think the Taylormade Qi10 tour Fairway wood would probably be a better fit for me, I really liked my initial experience with the Taylormade Qi10 and I think a lot of mid handicappers will too.

Who is the Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Wood for?

Taylormade Qi10 Fairway Wood5

“The Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood would be an excellent choice for players who want to do away with their cut spin.”

I was very impressed with the low spin numbers whether I was hitting the ball flush or missing towards the toe.

Side spin was greatly reduced on mis-hits which kept my balls on the fairway and contributed to the overall tight shot dispersion.

So if you are struggling with accuracy off the tee or even off the deck, the Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood can certainly help.

The standard Taylormade Qi10 fairway wood is out now and retails for $350.
