Best Budget & Affordable Golf Drivers 2023

golf driver

A good driver should be equal parts user match and budget-friendly. Unfortunately, manufacturers make it difficult to strike that balance most of the time.

Sometimes you may find a driver that feels perfect at fitting only to realize that it’s out of your price range.

But there are gems out there – you just have to be willing to sift through the dross to find them. In general, you want an affordable driver to be durable, to provide the distance you need and to match your swing type and speed.

Affordable drivers can be for everyone from beginners to scratch players. That’s because concepts like affordability and playability are subjective to the individuals. There are some general pros and cons to more affordable drivers though which include:

Pros:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Usually pretty forgiving
  • Sometimes have advanced features

Cons:

  • May not be the most durable
  • Hard to find

That last con there is a doozy. But fear not for we have done the research and put together a list of the best affordable drivers in 2023!

#1 – Cobra Golf 2020 Men’s Speedzone Extreme Driver – Best Choice

Cobra Golf 2020 Men's Speedzone Extreme Driver Black-Yellow

We were pretty surprised that the Cobra Golf 2020 Men’s Speedzone Extreme Driver has been discounted so deeply over the last couple of seasons.

This was once their premium driver and it still has a ton of features that make it an incredible buy at just around $260.

First of all, the Cobra Golf 2020 Men’s Speedzone Extreme Driver features an extremely thin milled face that feeds into the sole and crown, generating an almost endless sweet spot.

This makes it very forgiving too. Heel misses flew straighter than normal with this driver.

The crown is fully made of carbon too which brings down the total weight by a significant amount.

In fact, the light weight was one of the first things we noticed about this driver. It also features a thin, lightweight titanium chassis.

This driver would be great for anyone with a slow to moderate swing speed.

Pros:

  • Premium features
  • Lightweight design
  • 69 gram rear weight

Cons:

  • Not great for faster swing speed players
  • Durability issues

Overall Rating: 97/100

#2 – TaylorMade SIM MAX Driver – Best Premium

TaylorMade SIM MAX Driver

This is a great driver if you need one that will provide a high degree of forgiveness. The SIM Max driver has a large footprint and the famous inertia generator.

The inertia generator puts a heavy steel weight in the extreme rear of the head to increase MOI.

With a stabler face, more force and a large sweet spot, it is very easy to increase your yardage with this driver.

In fact, most of our testers were seeing drive distance increases of about 8 yards. The SIM Max driver also features a slight face curvature.

This face curvature helps prevent side spin when you strike near the toe or heel. It also help produce straighter shots when you bottom or top the ball.

It is bulky, but it will be perfect for you if you want an optimally forgiving driver.

Pros:

  • Very forgiving
  • Expansive sweet spot
  • Great distance when you hit the sweet spot dead-center

Cons:

  • Not very workable
  • A bit bulky

Overall Rating: 95/100

#3 – TaylorMade RBZ Black Driver – Best Budget

TaylorMade RBZ Black Driver

The TaylorMade RBZ Black Driver features an adjustable loft sleeve so right off the bat, it is a very versatile driver.

What struck us the most about this driver though was the way it looks. The TaylorMade RBZ Black Driver features a sexy matte black finish with subtle copper appointments.

The head and core of this driver are made of titanium so it feels pretty light in the hands. In fact, most of our testers were noticing slight increases in swing speed with this driver.

The TaylorMade RBZ Black Driver also features the speed pocket which increases ball speed on low face strikes.

This would be a great driver for anyone who is struggling with swing speed. The adjustable loft sleeve will also help players get the ball higher up in the air.

Pros:

  • Very versatile
  • Generates good launch
  • Feels light in the hands

Cons:

  • No adjustable weight
  • Produces a muted feel

Overall Rating: 95/100

#4 – Callaway X HOT Driver – Best for Beginners & High Handicappers

Callaway X HOT Driver

The Callaway X HOT Driver may not be the newest kid on the block but it still features some premium appointments that shouldn’t be ignored if you’re looking for a good deal on a new driver.

The Callaway X HOT Driver features adjustable loft and lie so it’s very versatile.

It also has variable face thickness so it rewards your dead-center strikes with more distance and helps preserve ball speed when you hit out towards the toe or inwards towards the heel.

In fact, our testers noted that no matter how the face is open or closed, this driver produces some pretty straight shots.

That’s why it would be a great choice for beginners and high handicappers – it will really help you stay on the fairway.

On top of all that, the Callaway X HOT Driver face was milled to play, well, hot. It produces great ball speed that holds up against newer Callaway drivers.

Pros:

  • Excellent price
  • Milled face
  • Very forgiving

Cons:

  • No adjustment tool included
  • Limited shaft options

Overall Rating: 96/100

#5 – PXG 2021 0211 Driver

PXG 2021 0211 Driver

Surprised to see a PXG driver on the list? To be honest, we were also a bit surprised that the 211 drivers are so affordable now.

At just about $230 you can get this PXG driver that features a hybrid crown design and a super-thin titanium alloy face.

Even when the 0211 came out, it was geared towards beginners and high handicappers and it’s features are the proof.

Lots of mass was moved to the rear/bottom of the club head which greatly benefits launch and carry distance.

While it is a bit hard to keep the PXG 2021 0211 Driver out of the wind on windy days, for the most part that shouldn’t be a problem.

It also produces a stable flight thanks to the crown which features titanium wings on the side but carbon in the middle to promote flex.

Pros:

  • Great for beginners and high handicappers
  • Good durability
  • Smooth solid feel at impact

Cons:

  • Adjusting the weights takes time
  • Relatively basic features

Overall Rating: 95/100

#6 – Srixon Golf 2017 Men’s Z 756 Driver

Srixon Golf 2017 Men's Z 756 Driver

Everything about the Srixon Golf 2017 Men’s Z 756 Driver was designed to help players generate more distance and accuracy.

It starts with the multi-step sole which helps increase flex at impact. This allows the face to push the ball to generate both speed and distance.

The Srixon Golf 2017 Men’s Z 756 Driver features a face cup design which helps with forgiveness on low-face strikes.

This is the feature that prompts us to recommend this driver to players who tend to hit the ball low on the face.

It essentially makes the low-face portion part of the sweet spot. The Srixon Golf 2017 Men’s Z 756 Driver also features an adjustable loft sleeve to accommodate the swing types of many different players and help with shot-shaping.

Pros:

  • Very durable
  • Premium look
  • Great price for a Srixon club

Cons:

  • Hollow sound
  • Old Srixon model

Overall Rating: 96/100

#7 – Callaway Golf Mavrik Driver

Callaway Golf Mavrik Driver

The Mavrik is another one of those drivers that can be considered old and “outdated” in 2022; but still  offers a lot to a wide variety of golfers.

Even when it came out, the features were a bit ahead of their time so this driver is still viable for mid to high handicappers for sure.

First of all, it has a triaxial carbon crown which allows for more of the crown to actually be made of carbon fiber.

So it’s pretty light overall. The Mavrik was also one of the first drivers to feature an AI designed face optimized for speed.

The Mavrik does play pretty long too. Our testers were getting an average drive distance of 231 yards after three swings with the Callaway Mavrik.

Accuracy is a bit of an issue and flight can be a bit unpredictable. But the distance makes up for that in our opinion.

Pros:

  • Great distance
  • Feels like there is very little drag on the head
  • Feels good on the downswing

Cons:

  • Not the most forgiving driver
  • Accuracy is a bit of an issue

Overall Rating: 94/100

#8 – Bullet Golf B52 Bomber Anti Slice Driver – Best Non-Conforming (Illegal) Driver

Bullet Golf B52 Bomber Anti Slice Driver

This is really more of a driver to have fun with at the range.

The size makes it illegal for tournament play; but if you ever want to blow off some steam or impress friends, the Bullet Golf B52 Bomber Anti Slice Driver is a cool driver to have handy.

Some of our testers were getting upwards of 260 yards from this thing. There is plenty of offset that you can see from point of address too.

The thing we liked about the Bullet Golf B52 Bomber Anti Slice Driver right away was that it produces straight shots if you tend to slice the ball.

The pronounced offset helps keep you on-line from the tee and the lightweight design will help you send missiles down the fairway.

Plus, this is a supremely affordable driver at just over $100. It may be worth keeping around for the fun factor alone. It could also be useful as a practice driver as well.

Pros:

  • A lot of fun
  • Lightweight design
  • Oversized head

Cons:

  • Not legal for tournament play
  • Not very durable

Overall Rating: 93/100

#9 – Tour Edge Golf Bazooka 470 – Best for Seniors

Tour Edge Golf Bazooka 470

What we liked about the Tour Edge Golf Bazooka 470 right away was the color scheme.

It has a cool black and yellow color scheme that gives it a premium look. And when you get it with a senior flex shaft, it’s a great driver for seniors.

It flexes to a high degree so it’s easy on the body and dampens harsh vibrations. Plus, you get better distance even if your swing speed has slowed down some.

The Tour Edge Golf Bazooka 470 features a 460CC titanium head which also helps with weight.

There is even a rear weight that can be adjusted to tweak the CG to your liking. You get all this in a driver that costs around just $120! This is a great deal and a must-play for seniors or anyone returning to the game after a long hiatus.

Pros:

  • PVD finish
  • Adjustable CG
  • Looks great

Cons:

  • Gets scuffed easily
  • Low resale value

Overall Rating: 95/100

#10 – MACGREGOR Golf MACDRIVER110

MACGREGOR Golf MACDRIVER110

Right away, we noticed that the MACGREGOR Golf MACDRIVER110 had a large footprint and a huge sweet spot.

For those two reasons alone, this would be a great driver for high handicappers and beginners. Particularly those who are struggling with accuracy from the tee.

It has an overzised 460cc head and a face that seems to stretch to vertical infinity. Our testers said that this driver was ultra-forgiving on low-face shots and produced impressive distance.

The face plays hot and the titanium head helps keep things both lightweight and stable.

The MACGREGOR Golf MACDRIVER110 driver also has an adjustable loft sleeve so there is at least a modicum of versatility.

The major downside to this driver though is that it doesn’t launch very high which could be a problem for some high handicappers who rely on carry distance.

Pros:

  • Includes adjustment key
  • The stock grip is actually very comfortable
  • Looks great at point of address

Cons:

  • Doesn’t produce very good apex height
  • Some of the internal components seem to break loose easily

Overall Rating: 93/100
