Taylormade M6 Vs. Callaway Epic Speed Driver Comparison Overview

Callaway and Taylormade are two golf club manufacturers that seem to copy off of each other quite a bit. In fact, it can be hard for inexperienced players to tell some of their respective models apart based on features alone.

If this is the situation you find yourself in, we can help. We went out and tested two of the most popular beginner-level drivers from these companies to get down to what really makes them unique, beneficial and where they may be lacking.

Taylormade M6 Driver Overview

The Taylormade M6 driver was designed to be lightweight but still put plenty of power behind each of your drives.

The Taylormade M6 sports a unique combination of a lightweight carbon sole construction and a heavy rear weight. The weight savings from the sole allow for the heavy rear weight which helps with forgiveness and distance.

The Taylormade M6 driver also has an adjustable hosel so players will have an easier time of shaping their shots and adjusting to weather/course conditions. While distance and forgiveness were excellent with this driver (267 yards on average) we had a couple of complaints.

For one thing, the head doesn’t feel very stable on most drives. For another, it was producing a decent amount of side spin off the tee.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver Overview

The Callaway Epic Speed driver has a couple of the same key features as the Taylormade M6.

Namely, an adjustable hosel and a carbon fiber sole. Only, the Epic Speed also sports a carbon fiber crown so it is even lighter than the Taylormade M6. In fact, you can get the Epic Speed with a D2 swing weight whereas the Taylormade M6 is only available in D3.

The Epic Speed also has a nice-feeling titanium face and stability is enhanced with the internal Jailbreak bracing bars. The bars also helped improve the consistency of this driver over that of the Taylormade M6.

So which driver played longer? It was nearly a complete tie in terms of spin rate which made for a marginal advantage in terms of distance. However, the Epic Speed held that slight distance advantage by playing about 7 yards longer than the M6 on average.

The Epic Speed makes improvements to stability, consistency and distance even if the spin rates are the same between it and the Taylormade M6 driver.

Callaway Epic Speed Drivers

In 20 Words Or Less

The Epic Speed driver is all about creating distance. It can help with all things speed including swing speed.

Taylormade M6 Driver

In 20 Words Or Less

The Taylormade M6 does a little more of everything that the M4 driver does.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver – First Impressions

The Callaway Epic Speed driver has a unique design but we were a bit bummed to see that it is the only driver in the Epic family to not have an adjustable weight.

Still, the Epic Speed wasn’t really built for shot shaping. It produces very long & hopefully straight shots and is plenty forgiving with the Flash Face design.

Just don’t expect exceptional accuracy with it.

The driver is great at producing club speed, ball speed and distance. The lower spin rates allow for shots that move left to right less and less.

If you are not consistent with your swing, you would be better off going with the Max range as the speed may be prone to slicing for some.

The Epic Family

The Epic Speed is accompanied by the Epic Max and the Epic Max LS.

Both the Max and Max LS have adjustable weights (16 grams in the former and 13 in the latter). As you can imagine, the Epic Max is the most forgiving in the family.

Taylormade M6 First Impressions

The Taylormade M6 certainly looks more intimidating than the M4at first glance but once you pick it up you can feel how light and wieldy it truly is.

The Taylormade M6 features a carbon sole to help offset the additional 46 grams of weight placed in the back of the head. It was very comfortable to swing and we got an instant boost in distance.

The M Family

The M6 is joined by, of course, the M4 and the M2. By comparison, the M2 is a bit lighter than the M6 but ultimately plays shorter.

Callaway Epic Speed Selling Points

  • Cyclone Aero head shape
  • Triaxial carbon crown
  • Adjustable hosel
  • Redesigned Jailbreak bars
  • Latest Flash Face version
  • A.I. design

Taylormade M6 Selling Points

  • More carbon material than the M4
  • Feels lighter and more comfortable in the hands
  • Very high MOI
  • Generates consistent spin
  • Consistent launch angles and shot-shaping
  • It’s overall longer than the M4

Callaway Epic Speed – Who are they for?

The Callaway Epic Speed driver would be great for anyone who needs some help with their swing speed and is interested purely in distance.

The Epic Speed driver doesn’t offer much in the way of workability but then again, it wasn’t designed for that.

If you are looking for straight shots that fly farther, the Epic Speed would be a solid choice.

The head was designed with a relatively flat crown to decrease drag so this driver might even be able to help you up your swing speed.

It doesn’t produce a ton of spin off the tee but there is still some.

Epic Family

The Epic Max and Max LS are packing a lot of the same technology as the Epic Speed but are more centered around forgiveness, slice elimination and straight, higher launching, more consistent shots.

The Max is super forgiving and the Max LS is a low spin version, aimed at straight shots for slicers and hookers.

The Epic Speed is built simply for distance and straightness.

Who is the Taylormade M6 for?

The Taylormade M6 would be a great choice for high to mid handicappers.

You get a good amount of distance and forgiveness help with the Taylormade M6 driver. The twist face does make it difficult to work. So just like with the M4 driver, the M6 is not an ideal choice for more seasoned players.

We also really like how the weight pulls your swing down ever so slightly to produce high launch. The extreme rear weight also helps distribute energy from your swing all over the face so you still get pretty impressive ball speed when you miss the sweet spot.

Distance: 95/100

Feel & Control: 92/100

Accuracy: 94/100

Forgiveness: 95/100
