Nippon Modus 105 Vs Nippon Modus 120 Shaft Comparison Overview

Nippon Modus 105 Vs Nippon Modus 120 Shaft

When you are comparing the Nippon Modus 105 and the Nippon Modus 120 there are a couple of things that you can assume before even swinging them.

Firstly, you know that the Nippon Modus 105 will be lighter and more likely to increase your swing speed.

Secondly, you know that the Nippon Modus 120 will be heavier and is likely to feel more stable. Nippon Modus shafts are tour-proven so you can also assume that they flat out perform.

For this comparison overview, what we really wanted to do was suss out the subtle differences between these weight classes. Take a look at what our testing unveiled.

Nippon Modus 105 Shaft Overview

Nippon Modus 105 Shaft1

“The Nippon Modus 105 is available in regular (103g), stiff (106.5g) and extra stiff flex (112g).”

All three weight options have a similar balance point with the kick point near the grip. Even at this light weight class, the Nippon Modus 105 has very little torque.

While it was incredibly easy to swing and affect a nice draw with, it felt amazingly stable.

Overall, the Nippon Modus 105 gave us slightly higher launch angles than the Nippon Modus 120. That wasn’t surprising. What was surprising was that the 105 gave us tighter dispersion.

Like I mentioned, we were mostly hitting little draws with the 105 but no ball landed more than 8 yards away from another.

Nippon Modus 120 Shaft Overview

Nippon Modus 120 Shaft

“The Nippon Modus 120 is available in regular (111g), stiff (114g), extra stiff (120g) and tour extra stiff (126g).”

One thing we noticed right away was that we were digging a lot more with this shaft. It took us some time to adjust to the extra weight.

When we did though, carry was almost identical to the Nippon Modus 105 – just two yards in favor of the 105.

Also, we didn’t feel the club head move as fluidly through the ball as we did with the 105. There was just more effort that had to be put into this shaft.

“In the end, it could simply be that the Nippon Modus 105 simply fit our swings better than the 120. That’s why it’s so important to go in for a fitting when you can.

In general though, if you are used to a lighter steel shaft, you will really love the Nippon Modus 105. The Nippon Modus 120 is manageable; but will probably take some time to get used to.”

In fact, it was too smooth at times. Sometimes, mis-hits actually felt more accurate than they actually were because of the advanced variable rigidity in this shaft.

The Nippon Modus 120 shafts offer the player great control and accuracy with the wedges and scoring irons. Launch and spin were a little underwhelming though.

Who Should Buy it?

First and foremost, if you are looking for a shaft for your irons that will flatten out your trajectory and give you more distance that way, you simply must get fitted for the Nippon Modus 120 shafts.

That is by far the best thing about them besides the silky smooth feel they offer.
