Honma XP1 Vs Honma TW747P Irons Comparison and Review 2023
Honma is really ramping things up in terms of their North American market penetration and the Honma TW747 P and XP1 irons are driving a lot of that progress.
So far, Honma has done a good job of producing irons with premium appointments but still making them accessible to the everyday player. The XP1 for example is a forged iron with a player’s cavity back.
The Honma TW747 P irons similarly mix playability with user-friendliness as they feature a carbon fiber cavity back but relatively short blades.
Both are similar in design concept but which one might actually benefit your game? Find out in the following comparison overview.
Honma XP1 Irons Overview
The Honma XP1 irons are surely game-improvement irons; but their forged construction defies that categorization.
The forged design and the fact that heads and the shafts were built in the same facility and meant to be built together give these irons a really sweet feel. In fact, the feel is what really impressed us about these irons.
The Honma XP1’s also feature hollow-body design in the long irons which helps tremendously with distance – especially when you combine a hollow-body design with extremely thin faces as Honma has.
These are players cavity back irons which becomes important as you get down to the short irons. That’s because the short irons have surprisingly deep cavities; but you really can’t notice it at address. Despite the deep cavities, the short XP1’s look clean and crisp at address.
The XP1 irons offer a surprising combination of premium feel, short game precision and long game distance.
Honma TW747P Irons Overview
The Honma TW747 P irons have a compact profile and thin toplines.
And despite the blade-like look at address, these irons are cavity backs. In fact, one of the coolest things about them is that they have carbon fiber cavities.
This helps keep the total weight down without sacrificing anything in the way of launch.
The Honma TW747 P irons are also very strong-lofted irons. For instance, the pitching wedge is set at 43.5 degrees. In irons 4-10 of the Honma TW747 P set, 20 grams of tungsten have been placed in the sole to lower CG.
This low CG placement works in concert with the string lofts – and the ridiculous spin. The spin of the Honma TW747 P irons is more akin to a fairway wood – even in the short irons.”
The Honma TW747 P irons are incredible distance irons if you have moderate swing accuracy.
Overview Conclusion
Both of these irons provide great distance but one actually outperformed the other around the pin.
The XP1 irons were just a bit more accurate around the green. Even though they lack spin just like the Honma TW747 P’s, the deep cavity back allows for better distance control.
Honma XP1 Irons First Impressions
What first struck us was the feel of these irons.
The XP1’s offer great response and acute feel that will appeal to both high and low handicappers.
Honma TW747P Irons First Impressions
We were surprised at how small the heads were at first.
We weren’t really expecting that from a set of irons that is clearly marketed as game improvement.

Honma XP1 Key Technology
The tech behind these irons is pretty basic; but it works well for a broad spectrum of players.
Forged Design: The forged design feels really nice and the feedback is terrific.
Sole Weighting: This feature lowers the CG and places more mass behind the sweet spot for better distance.
Hollow Design: The long irons have hollow bodies which remove support from the face so it hinges to a higher degree.
Honma TW747 P Key Technology
Again, the tech is pretty basic but it all works together for explosive distance.
Carbon Fiber Cavity: Carbon fiber is extremely strong yet light. It helps keep the overall weight of the club down.
Tungsten Weights: The weights help offset the low launch of these clubs.
Shortened Neck Lengths: The necks have been shortened by 4mm which puts the CG even lower.

Who Should Buy the Honma XP1 Irons?
The XP1’s are a great choice for anyone who is seeking a combination of distance and short game control.
There isn’t much lateral workability to speak of with these irons and for game improvement clubs, they are pretty expensive.
However, if you are tired of seeing your ball sail over the green on short approaches you will love the acute distance control of these irons – especially from the scoring irons.
For those reasons, the Honma XP1 irons would be great for mid to high handicap players.
