Honma TW757 VX Irons Review – Good for Handicappers & Forgiving?

“The Honma TW757 VX irons have the classic look of forged Honma irons. They look like player’s irons but there is more to these clubs than meets the eye.”

The Honma TW757 VX irons are perhaps the most approachable irons in the TW757 series. In the bag, they look like traditional player’s performance irons which is to say, they look amazing.

Even at address, you don’t see a ton of offset and the toplines and blade lengths are kept well in check. However, high handicappers shouldn’t write these irons off as unusable right away. It’s what’s under the good of these clubs that is really interesting.

The Honma TW757 Iron Family

“Included in the TW757 line are the Honma TW757 P irons, the Honma TW757 B irons and these Honma TW757 VX irons.”

The Honma TW757 VX are player’s cavity back irons while the Honma TW757 B irons are muscle backs. Honma calls the Honma TW757 P their “player’s distance” irons and are perhaps the most forgiving irons in the line.

Are They Good for High Handicappers?

“The Honma TW757 VX irons are actually surprisingly forgiving.”

They feature a 7-gram weight in the toe and perimeter weighting in the heel. When we mis-hit with the Honma TW757 VX irons, we weren’t punished harshly. Ball speed loss was minimal and we were still finding the fairway.

The Honma TW757 VX irons have a moderately compact head design and a shallow cavity back. As a “player’s cavity back” you can imagine how subtle that cavity actually is. Still, you get enough of an undercut that it is still pretty easy to get these strong-lofted irons up into the air.

Overall, we wouldn’t say that the Honma TW757 VX irons are the best irons in the Honma TW757 family for high handicappers – that distinction belongs to the Honma TW757 P irons. Still, the Honma TW757 VX irons are certainly more forgiving than they look.

Are They Forgiving?

“Your slight mis-hits are barely going to be punished with these irons.”

That’s the best thing about them in terms of forgiveness. Irons 4-8 in this set also have a 7-gram weight in the toes. This will help preserve ball speed when you miss wide out towards the toe.

Our testers found that it was easy to keep the ball on-line with these irons as well. The perimeter weighting helps prevent twisting on off-center strikes. The soles worked marvelously in the rough too. They allow you to pinch balls out of tight lies and resist chunking in thick turf.

Again, they are not the most forgiving irons in the series but as long as you are moderately accurate, the Honma TW757 VX’s will reward you with impressive distance and straight flight.

Differences Between the Honma TW757 VX and the Titleist T200 Irons

“The T200 irons also have a player preferred shaping and compact blades.”

However, the tungsten weighting in the T200 is progressive throughout the set. The T200’s also have a polymer insert that helps smooth out vibration at impact and gives the face more explosion. However, the S20S carbon steel construction of the Honma TW757 VX irons feels better and allows for more workability throughout the set.

Available Shafts

  • Nippon Modus Tour 105 steel shaft
  • Vizard IB-WF (steel and composite versions available)

Are the Honma TW757 VX Irons Worth it?

“By far, the best thing about these irons is the control and workability they give you throughout the set.”

The S20S carbon steel construction will help you work the ball around the pin. The undercut cavity and sole design will help you get unexpected launch from these strong-lofted irons and hold more greens with the longer irons. We were very impressed with the amount of spin we were getting on long approaches with the long irons considering their strong loft.

If you are a better player (in the 12-5 handicap range) you will love that you’re able to bend the ball in the air with these irons. If you’re a higher handicap player, the Honma TW757 P irons may be more worth it for you.

Honma TW757 VX Irons – First Impressions

“The Honma TW757 VX irons look really great behind the ball and in the bag.”

But once you’ve taken a couple swings, you will be impressed with the soft feel of these irons. And for strong-lofted irons, better players will notice that it is still possible to shape your shot to a high degree.

The Honma TW757 Family of Irons

Honma TW757 B Irons

The Honma TW757 B irons sport a multi-material construction with 8620 carbon steel as the star of the show. Overall, the feel isn’t as soft as the Honma TW757 VX irons; but you still get phenomenal control around the pin. The Honma TW757 B’s are muscle back irons so you get a more traditional blade look than you do with  the Honma TW757 VX or Honma TW757 P irons.

Honma TW757 P Irons

The Honma TW757 P irons have similar loft characteristics as the Honma TW757 VX’s. However, the undercut cavity is more pronounced for higher launch. The Honma TW757 P’s also feature an L-shaped face insert that helps improve forgiveness on low-face strikes.

Honma TW757 VX Irons

The Honma TW757 VX’s are perhaps the most workable irons in the line. They feature the softest S20S carbon steel construction and of course, are forged irons.
