Honma TW747 P Irons Review – Good for High Handicappers & Forgiving?

Honma TW747 P Irons

“When we think of Honma irons, we usually conjure up images of thin, butter-knife-like forged irons that are meant for low handicappers.”

But the Honma TW747 P irons go a long way towards shattering that preconceived notion.

The Honma TW747 P irons get overlooked a lot – and we think it has to do with  the fact that they don’t fit the typical mold of Honma irons.

In fact, we’re willing to bet that most golfers don’t even speak the name Honma and the phrase “game improvement” in the same breath.

But if you are looking for a good set of game improvement irons and you haven’t taken a look at the Honma TW747 P’s, now is the time to do so. So join us as we go in-depth with the Honma TW747 P irons.

The Honma TW747 Iron Family

“If you are looking for the more traditional Honma profile and styling, the Honma TW747 V irons may be more your speed.

First of all, the Honma TW747 V irons have a noticeably smaller profile than the Honma TW747 P irons.

The V’s have a shorter blade, a thinner topline and almost no offset to speak of.

On top of that, the Honma TW747 V irons have a shallower and less noticeable cavity than the Honma TW747 P irons.

The Honma TW747 V irons would therefore feel better in the hands of mid to low handicappers.

Are They Good for High Handicappers?

“Even though the Honma TW747 P irons are larger than their Honma TW747 V cousins, it’s understandable if they don’t exactly look the part of GI irons.”

These aren’t tiny blades by any means. When you look down at them behind the ball, you don’t get the impression that you’re playing with a butter knife.

They don’t look like shovels either. The Honma TW747 P’s have a moderate profile at address.

They do however, have a sizable cavity back. In the bag, you get the impression that these are truly GI irons.

The Honma TW747 P irons are good for the high handicap player who is having trouble with ballooning shots because they have a strong loft profile.

The best thing about these irons for high handicappers is that they aren’t tiny; but they still produce low launch and spin that will help most players gain yardage.

Are They Forgiving?

“From the 4-iron all the way down to the pitching wedge, these irons have a 20 gram tungsten weight in the sole.”

This is by no means a new technology but it is an effective way of lowering the CG and increasing head stability. Our testers said that the Honma TW747 P irons were easy to swing.

While it took more than a few swings to find the sweet spot, our testers locked onto it like a dog’s jaws on a T-bone steak once they found it.

One of the most interesting things about the Honma TW747 P irons is that they were kind of ahead of their time when they came out. Honma released them in 2018 – well before the carbon fiber craze.

Still, the Honma TW747 P irons feature a carbon fiber cavity area that helps keep the  overall weight down without sacrificing MOI.

Extreme heel/toe mis-hits were still punished with reduced speed and increased deviation; but most of our testers found it easy to swing these irons quickly and increase their average distances.

Differences Between the Honma TW747 P Irons and the Taylormade Stealth Irons

“The Taylormade Stealth irons have even stronger lofts than the Honma TW747 P’s.”

In fact, the launch was too low for a lot of our testers who were unable to capitalize on distance gains.

The Stealth irons have a similar look to the Honma TW747 P’s at address; but it was harder to work them higher when we needed more stopping power.

Available Shafts

The only stock shaft that Honma makes available for the Honma TW747 P’s is a Vizard for TW747 50.

It comes in regular, stiff regular and stiff flex.

Are the Honma TW747 P Irons Worth it?

“The Honma TW747 P irons will deliver almost-instant increases in distance.”

In fact, most of our testers said that the Honma TW747 P’s played a club longer than their normal irons.

The only caveat is that you have to get into a groove with these irons to find their sweet spots.

The combo of strong loft and shorter blades means a bit more of a learning curve for high handicap players – but the distance pay-off is certainly worth it.

“The orange appointments were a bit of a turn-off for us.”

But that mattered very little once we dialed in on the sweet spot of these irons.

The pronounced cavity back doesn’t look very unique; but once you get past the looks, you’ll start sending missiles down the fairway.
