Cobra LTDx Vs. Taylormade Stealth Driver Comparison & Review

2022 has already seen some landmark releases by golf’s heaviest perennial hitters. We are always excited to test new driver models and today’s comparison is really special because we will be stepping into what Taylormade is calling the “Carbon Age.”

Going up against the new Taylormade Stealth driver is the new Cobra LTDx which may not be as innovative as the Stealth but still has plenty to offer a wide variety of players. Find out what we mean in the following comparison overview.

Cobra LTDx Driver Overview

The Cobra LTDx takes variable face thickness to entirely new heights with a face that has 15 different thickness zones.

It was clear that Cobra wanted to make the Cobra LTDx driver as forgiving as possible which was surely the reasoning behind the meticulous and painstaking face architecture. The Cobra LTDx plays long when struck on the sweet spot and still plays long when struck out near the toe or inward on the heel.

The Cobra LTDx driver was also built to be lightweight. It has a carbon fiber crown and a lightweight titanium body frame. For our testers, this equated to swing speed increases of up to 4MPH and 2.2 MPH on average.

While this didn’t always translate to more distance off the tee, the Cobra LTDx driver was also very forgiving thanks a total of 15 grams worth of rear weighting.

Taylormade Stealth Driver Overview

The Taylormade Stealth driver features a revolutionary carbon fiber and polyurethane face wrap.

The point of using 60 layers of carbon fiber for the face instead of any kind of metal was to generate as much weight savings as possible. Carbon fiber is also supposed to work to transfer energy efficiently. For our testers, the main advantage to the new face material was weight.

The Stealth driver is extremely light even with a heavy weight placed in the back of the head. Spin rates were a little higher than with the Cobra LTDx driver; but our testers also noticed that the Stealth driver was better at producing straight drives.

We liked the launch and ball speed that the forward-weighting of the Cobra LTDx provided. While it was heavier than the Stealth driver, it certainly rivaled it in terms of distance and forgiveness. The Stealth also produced straighter shots but overall, we liked the all-around performance of the Cobra LTDx.

Cobra LTDx Driver – First Impressions

Needless to say, we were pretty excited to get our hands on this new Cobra driver.

And while it wasn’t quite what we were expecting, it still smacked of that same old Cobra innovation. We weren’t quite expecting the Cobra LTDx to be such a “game-improvement” driver. But the higher handicap testers in our group were pleasantly surprised. Plus, the Cobra LTDx isn’t the only release in this model…

The LTD Family

Included in this new line of LTD drivers is the LTDx LS and the LTDx Max. The LS has the most forward-positioned weight so as you can imagine, it has the lowest spin rates. Of course, that means detracting a bit from MOI so it is not quite as forgiving as the Cobra LTDx. But if max forgiveness is what you’re after then you should be looking at the LTDx Max. It produces the highest launch and has an extra rear-weight to increase forgiveness.

Taylormade Stealth Driver – First Impressions

The Taylormade Stealth driver was impressive in almost every respect but we were really interested in testing our first carbon-faced driver.

For the most part, we weren’t disappointed. While it became clear fairly early on that the Taylormade Stealth driver was more for mid to low handicap players, it was awesome to experience something so fresh, new and most importantly, effective.

As you may expect from a Taylormade driver, the Taylormade Stealth features the famed speed pocket and a redesigned inertia generator that was upping the swing speeds of even our higher handicap testers (by 2-3 MPH).

The Stealth Family

The Stealth family includes the Stealth Plus and the Stealth HD drivers. The Stealth Plus is the only one in the line that features a sliding rear weight while the Stealth HD is the only one with internal draw bias.

Who is the Cobra LTDx Driver for?

With the Cobra LTDx driver, Cobra went straight down the middle of the road – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

That phrase usually has a bad connotation attached to it for mediocrity but that is not what we mean here. The Cobra LTDx does a good job of straddling the line between forgiveness and fast ball speed. It features a new H.O.T. face which separates the face into 15 different sections. The 15 different sections represent different thicknesses to accommodate for common mis-hit areas.

It also features a titanium chassis that helps increase stability in the mid section without significantly increasing weight.

For beginners and high handicappers though, the real star of the show is the rear tungsten weighting. While we have to admit, this is a common and rather basic feature in game-improvement drivers, it still makes a low-spin driver more accessible to higher handicap players.
