Cobra F9 Speedback Vs Callaway Epic Flash Driver Comparison Overview

The Cobra F9 Speedback and Callaway Epic Flash drivers were both meant to be lightweight and wieldy in the hands.

With weight savings in the crown and sole design, manufacturers are more able to place weight where it will most benefit players.

That is the basic principle behind both of these drivers but from there, they veer away from each other in many respects.

Both of these drivers are well-established by now but if you have been looking at them and still can’t decide, we can help.

Of course, a fitting is always advisable but even before you go in for a fitting, it may be beneficial to get the fundamental facts on these drivers to make the most use of your time. Learn everything you need to know about them in the following article.

Cobra F9 Speedback Driver Overview

The Cobra F9 Speedback is loaded with technology and features that are meant to help push ball speeds to the max.

So does it deliver? That will still really depend on who’s swinging the club. Despite their best efforts (and lofty marketing) Cobra, or any golf club manufacturer for that matter, has still not made a universally “fast” driver.

With the Cobra F9 Speedback, they do a good job of laying a good foundation: a carbon fiber crown, a curved face that reduces spin rates, an aerodynamic head shape, a milled face and even an adjustable weight system.

However, if you are still toiling away in the 75-90MPH swing speed range, you won’t be able to get much use from this driver. Still, the better testers in our group were able to confirm that the Cobra F9 Speedback lived up to its name – at least for them.

Callaway Epic Flash Driver Overview

The Callaway Epic Flash driver has been succeeded by subsequent models but still holds a lot of value for mid to high handicap players.

One of the features that the Cobra F9 Speedback and Callaway Epic Flash drivers have in common (keep in mind that the Cobra F9 Speedback is considered a more premium driver) is a carbon crown.

In fact, the Epic Flash driver has a carbon crown and sole to help keep the weight down and redistribute it to promote optimal CG. We should mention that the CG in this driver is orientated in the rear back of the head to enhance forgiveness.

The downfall to this CG orientation is that it produces a decent amount of side spin off the tee. Still, one thing that the Epic Flash driver has on the Cobra F9 Speedback driver is a 16 gram sliding rear weight that can be set in the draw, neutral and fade positions.

Both of these drivers bring something unique to the table so ultimately, it will depend on what your preferences are and which departments your game could use the most help in.

Cobra F9 Speedback First Impressions

The first thing that struck us was how fast this club was on the downswing.

The Cobra F9 Speedback really does live up to its name. The lines and contours of the head add an aerodynamic that can’t be mistaken.

Even some of the slower swing speed testers in our group were able to add an MPH or two to their swing with this driver.

We also really liked the adjustable weights. In particular, our testers liked shifting the weights to the forward position to achieve almost non-existent spin off the tee and low, piercing shot trajectories.

The Cobra F9 Speedback Family

The Cobra F9 Speedback is available in 9, 10.5 and 12 degree loft varieties to accommodate players of different skill levels.

Callaway Epic Flash First Impressions

The stability of the head is what we noticed first.

After finding the sweet spot and giving it everything we had, the Epic Flash did a great job of maintaining flight and distance consistency.

While the faster swing speed testers in our group were able to get more distance from the Cobra F9 Speedback; the slower swing speed testers drove the ball farther with the Epic Flash.

The Epic Family

The Epic family consists of the Epic Speed driver which is the only one in the family to lack a sliding weight. You also have the Epic Max which is the largest and most forgiving of the Epic drivers. The Epic Max LS has a 13 gram sliding rear weight and produces very little spin off the tee.
