Callaway Mavrik Vs Callaway Epic Speed Drivers Comparison And Review 2021

The Callaway Mavrik didn’t necessarily pave the way for the Callaway Epic Speed but it certainly informed how the subsequent drivers would be designed. You will find that the Epic Speed driver has a lot of the same features as the Mavrik – only updated and upgraded.

These similarities prompted us to see just how much of an improvement the Epic Speed driver was over the older Callaway Mavrik. We share our findings with you in the following comparison overview.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver Overview

The Callaway Epic Speed driver has taken cues from the Mavrik but made improvements in key areas.

One of those areas is aerodynamics. Whereas the Callaway Mavrik driver has the cyclone aero-shaped head, the Epic Speed has been refined even further. The Epic Speed sports a taller top ribbon and flatter crown than the Mavrik.

In all honesty though, this refinement made only a marginal improvement in aerodynamic performance over the aero shape of the Mavrik. Both drivers performed similarly in terms of head speed with the Epic Speed performing slightly better.

The Epic Speed features the updated SS21 Flash Face which actually does mark a significant improvement in forgiveness. Unlike the SS20 Flash Face of the Mavrik, the SS21 version works to increase flex across more of the face.

That flex is tapered very well with the redesigned jailbreak bars which sprawl out laterally near the bottom and the top.

Callaway Mavrik Driver Overview

The Callaway Mavrik is tried and true but Callaway addressed it’s shortcomings in the Epic Speed driver.

Don’t get us wrong: the Mavrik is still a solid driver for mid handicappers. It has an adjustable hosel just like the Epic Speed. It has Flash Face technology (albeit an older iteration) and it even has the jailbreak bars.

However, the jailbreak bars of the Mavrik provide less lateral stability. In other words, you will get straighter shots out of the Epic Speed. Also the Flash Face SS20 of the Mavrik driver does less to increase ball speed around the sweet spot. In other words, it’s less forgiving.

We will say though, that the head shape was not improved very much from the Mavrik to the Epic Speed.

Mavrik Drivers

In 20 Words Or Less

A top driver from a top brand aimed at achieving maximum ball speeds, distance and forgiveness for any player.

Callaway Epic Speed Drivers

In 20 Words Or Less

The Epic Speed driver is all about creating distance. It can help with all things speed including swing speed.

Mavrik Driver – First Impressions

Once you get passed the bright colors and attractive design, you can immediately see how light and wieldy the Mavrik drivers really are.

The face on the club is huge and it gives you the confidence you need to let the driver rip, even on the first tee with a crowd gathered to watch. The face is also ultra thin, ultra light special steel which sends the ball into orbit on contact.

Two internal jailbreak bars on under side of the club hold everything together by connecting the sole with the crown and adding extra stability, feel, consistency and distance. The shape of the driver is also aerodynamic and like everything with the clubs, focused on more swing speed.

The Different Mavrik Driver Versions:

The Mavrik is for your average player or mid handicapper, medium levels of forgiveness, and mid spin. This one has a standard launch angle too.

The Mavrik max is similar with more forgiveness and a higher ball flight for higher handicappers

The Mavrik Pro has a 450cc head, less forgiveness and spin and higher emphasis on distance for low handicappers and fast swingers.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver – First Impressions

The Callaway Epic Speed driver has a unique design but we were a bit bummed to see that it is the only driver in the Epic family to not have an adjustable weight.

Still, the Epic Speed wasn’t really built for shot shaping. It produces very long & hopefully straight shots and is plenty forgiving with the Flash Face design.

Just don’t expect exceptional accuracy with it.

The driver is great at producing club speed, ball speed and distance. The lower spin rates allow for shots that move left to right less and less.

If you are not consistent with your swing, you would be better off going with the Max range as the speed may be prone to slicing for some.

The Epic Family

The Epic Speed is accompanied by the Epic Max and the Epic Max LS.

Both the Max and Max LS have adjustable weights (16 grams in the former and 13 in the latter). As you can imagine, the Epic Max is the most forgiving in the family.

Callaway Epic Speed – Who are they for?

The Callaway Epic Speed driver would be great for anyone who needs some help with their swing speed and is interested purely in distance.

The Epic Speed driver doesn’t offer much in the way of workability but then again, it wasn’t designed for that.

If you are looking for straight shots that fly farther, the Epic Speed would be a solid choice.

The head was designed with a relatively flat crown to decrease drag so this driver might even be able to help you up your swing speed.

It doesn’t produce a ton of spin off the tee but there is still some.

Epic Family

The Epic Max and Max LS are packing a lot of the same technology as the Epic Speed but are more centered around forgiveness, slice elimination and straight, higher launching, more consistent shots.

The Max is super forgiving and the Max LS is a low spin version, aimed at straight shots for slicers and hookers.

The Epic Speed is built simply for distance and straightness.

Distance: 97/10

Accuracy: 93/100

Forgiveness: 92/100

Feel & Control: 91/100

Overall Rating: 94/100
