Callaway Mavrik Vs Callaway Epic Max Drivers Comparison And Review 2021

In a lot of ways, the Callaway Mavrik paved the way for the Epic drivers. The Epic family of drivers feature a lot of the same features that the Mavriks do.

However, with time, Callaway refined their formula for distance, ball speed and forgiveness.

Case in point: the Callaway Epic Max driver. But is newer really better? We tested the Callaway Mavrik and the Callaway Epic Max driver side by side to see who each driver would work best for.

Callaway Epic Max Driver Overview

The Callaway Epic Max driver is billed as the most forgiving driver in the Epic family.

For starters, the Epic Max has a big, hefty 460CC head. The sole of this driver seems unending which at first, we didn’t really like.

None of us are exceptionally high handicapper but we thought that the head size might actually intimidate high handicappers as opposed to inspiring them with confidence.

However, after we got to playing with the Epic Max, we saw what it was all about. The triaxial carbon crown keeps the head surprisingly light while allowing internal weights to pull the CG of the driver down.

The result is almost effortless launch and a comfortable swing even for older players.

Yes, we are saying that the Epic Max is a good driver if you have a slow swing speed. It even has a sliding 16g weight that, in tandem with the OptiFit adjustable hosel, allows for a high degree of shot shaping.

Callaway Mavrik Driver Overview

The Callaway Mavrik also sports a 460CC head but with a smaller footprint.

The Mavrik felt more wieldy in the hands of our lower handicap testers and they liked the feel and workability of the titanium face.

Like the Epic Max driver, the Mavrik also features Jailbreak bracing bars to increase stability.

The Mavrik was nice for getting straight shots but didn’t offer much in the way of forgiveness. The SS20 Flash Face doesn’t do much to increase ball speed on toe or heel oriented shots.

The Mavrik also lacks a sliding weight which limits it’s shot shaping capability even with the OptiFit hosel.

Overall, the Epic Max driver was the more fun to play with. It had better shot shaping capability and it was more forgiving.

However, the large head may be an eyesore for better players. In fact, better players would probably prefer the suitableness of the Mavrik.

The face on the club is huge and it gives you the confidence you need to let the driver rip, even on the first tee with a crowd gathered to watch. The face is also ultra thin, ultra light special steel which sends the ball into orbit on contact.

Two internal jailbreak bars on under side of the club hold everything together by connecting the sole with the crown and adding extra stability, feel, consistency and distance. The shape of the driver is also aerodynamic and like everything with the clubs, focused on more swing speed.

The Different Mavrik Driver Versions:

The Mavrik is for your average player or mid handicapper, medium levels of forgiveness, and mid spin. This one has a standard launch angle too.

The Mavrik max is similar with more forgiveness and a higher ball flight for higher handicappers

The Mavrik Pro has a 450cc head, less forgiveness and spin and higher emphasis on distance for low handicappers and fast swingers.

Epic Max Driver – First Impressions

Right away, we could see that the Callaway Epic Max driver was big and bad. We couldn’t wait to get it out to the range and see what it was capable of.

This driver is built with A.I to optimize the placement of the weighting for high launching straighter shots but you can also adjust the weighting with a simple slider.

The Jailbreak bars add stability while the 360 flash cup face offers an incredible ball speed on impact.

The Callaway Epic Max did not disappoint in any category. Not only does it play further than most drivers; it also offers an increased level of forgiveness and consistency.
