Callaway Epic Speed Vs. PXG 0211 Driver Comparison And Review

Every golf club manufacturer claims that they make the longest and most forgiving driver. It’s enough to confuse any player. Really, the only way you can gauge how long or forgiving a driver will play is by going out and playing it for yourself.

If you have been looking at the PXG 0211 and/or the Callaway Epic Speed drivers but haven’t been able to get a fitting, allow us to offer you the next best thing: a side-by-side comparison of the drivers.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver Overview

The Callaway Epic Speed driver is the only driver in the Epic family to feature the “Cyclone Aero” head shape.

It’s also the only one not to have a sliding rear weight. Still, the cyclone aero shaping gives this driver a unique feel on the downswing.

It really did increase club head speed for most of our testers; but not by a huge margin.

It could be just enough to get your shots to fly farther, though. The Epic Speed also has a carbon toe patch to create a slight draw bias.

While this may be a boon to some we could see how it would be a drawback to others.

For our party, it resulted in straighter shots, though. The face is moderately forgiving but won’t do much for you on on shots near the crown or sole.

PXG 0211 Driver Overview

The PXG 0211 has a premium feel and the more advanced players in our testing party were able to get impressive distance with it.

The premium feel comes from a titanium alloy face and a unique crown construction, made up of carbon in the center and titanium on either side.

The result is a solid feel when you hit it dead-center. The PXG 0211 also played longer than the Epic Flash by an average of 7 yards.

While we admit that mid and low handicap players would probably get the best use out of this driver, we still think its the best investment overall.

The premium materials, better distance and increased workability make it a driver that, even if you’re not up to par yet, will offer more value in the long-run.

In the end, we liked the enhanced workability of the PXG 0211. The Epic Speed felt more restrictive in terms of shot-shaping which is understandable since it’s a driver made for high handicappers.

Callaway Epic Speed Drivers

In 20 Words Or Less

The Epic Speed driver is all about creating distance. It can help with all things speed including swing speed.

PXG 0211 Driver

In 20 Words or Less

The PXG 0211 driver also features an adjustable hosel in a club that is a bit more forgiving than its 0811 counterpart.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver – First Impressions

The Callaway Epic Speed driver has a unique design but we were a bit bummed to see that it is the only driver in the Epic family to not have an adjustable weight.

Still, the Epic Speed wasn’t really built for shot shaping. It produces very long & hopefully straight shots and is plenty forgiving with the Flash Face design.

Just don’t expect exceptional accuracy with it.

The driver is great at producing club speed, ball speed and distance. The lower spin rates allow for shots that move left to right less and less.

If you are not consistent with your swing, you would be better off going with the Max range as the speed may be prone to slicing for some.

The Epic Family

The Epic Speed is accompanied by the Epic Max and the Epic Max LS.

Both the Max and Max LS have adjustable weights (16 grams in the former and 13 in the latter). As you can imagine, the Epic Max is the most forgiving in the family.

PXG 0211 First Impressions

We were excited to see an adjustable hosel in what is essentially meant to be an entry-level PXG driver (if such a thing exists).

After the first swing, we were taken aback at how soft and smooth this driver felt. We credit this to the railed sole design which increase MOI but also adds stability by bracing the heel and toe.

The honeycombed polymer insert in the head doesn’t hurt either. Plus, the fact that you can shape shots better with the adjustable hosel actually makes this driver a great value.

PXG 0211 Selling Points

  • Single heel-oriented weight port enhances forgiveness

Callaway Epic Speed – Who are they for?

The Callaway Epic Speed driver would be great for anyone who needs some help with their swing speed and is interested purely in distance.

The Epic Speed driver doesn’t offer much in the way of workability but then again, it wasn’t designed for that.

If you are looking for straight shots that fly farther, the Epic Speed would be a solid choice.

The head was designed with a relatively flat crown to decrease drag so this driver might even be able to help you up your swing speed.

It doesn’t produce a ton of spin off the tee but there is still some.

Epic Family

The Epic Max and Max LS are packing a lot of the same technology as the Epic Speed but are more centered around forgiveness, slice elimination and straight, higher launching, more consistent shots.

The Max is super forgiving and the Max LS is a low spin version, aimed at straight shots for slicers and hookers.

The Epic Speed is built simply for distance and straightness.

PXG 0211 Driver – Who is it for?

The PXG 0211 driver is actually more forgiving than the 0811 so it would be more suitable for mid handicap players that need a little help with shot shaping.

We love the fact that PXG paired a high forgiveness driver with an adjustable hosel. While this driver still isn’t as forgiving as some Callaway and Taylormade entries, it is one of the most forgiving drivers that PXG has ever produced.

All in all we would say that this would be a suitable driver for a mid handicapper that already knows how to shape shots based on the nature of the hole.
