Callaway Epic Speed Vs. Callaway Rogue ST Max Driver Comparison & Review

Callaway is company that’s known for innovative style in their clubs. Very few of us have been disappointed in Callaway clubs with just a few exceptions over the years. So when we found out they were reviving the Rogue driver series, we were very excited.

However, we understand how difficult it can be to choose between drivers from the same manufacturer because there is often a lot of feature overlap. Such is the case for the new Callaway Rogue ST Max and the Callaway Epic Speed drivers so we decided to test them against each other.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver Overview

The Callaway Epic Speed driver has a handful of the same features as the Callaway Rogue ST Max.

However, these drivers are really for two different kinds of players. The Epic Speed will be best for anyone trying to get their swing speed up because it has a special aerodynamic head design which according to our testing at least, does really increase club head speed.

Like the Callaway Rogue ST Max, the Epic Speed also features a carbon fiber sole and crown in order to keep head weight down. The titanium Flash Face also produces a lot of flex to push ball speeds but the face profile is a bit shallow so higher handicap players may have trouble nailing the sweet spot.

Callaway Rogue ST Max Driver Overview

The Callaway Rogue ST Max also has a carbon sole and crown and the internal Jailbreak bars that make Callaway clubs like the Epic Speed so consistent and fast.

The Callaway Rogue ST Max takes forgiveness to the extreme though. Creating a huge increase in MOI is the 26 gram tungsten weight in the back of the head. The Callaway Rogue ST Max also has a deeper face profile making it more congenial for players struggling with accuracy.

Ball spin rates were pretty much the same between these two drivers but the Callaway Rogue ST Max produced higher apex height 9 times out of 10. The Callaway Rogue ST Max also has a more traditional head shape than the Epic Speed so it may simply look more familiar for most players.

While there is a decent amount of feature overlap between these two clubs, it’s clear that the Callaway Rogue ST Max will be much better for beginners and high handicappers.

The Callaway Rogue Max ST offers accessible distance for players of nearly all skill levels.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver – First Impressions

The Callaway Epic Speed driver has a unique design but we were a bit bummed to see that it is the only driver in the Epic family to not have an adjustable weight.

Still, the Epic Speed wasn’t really built for shot shaping. It produces very long & hopefully straight shots and is plenty forgiving with the Flash Face design.

Just don’t expect exceptional accuracy with it.

The driver is great at producing club speed, ball speed and distance. The lower spin rates allow for shots that move left to right less and less.

If you are not consistent with your swing, you would be better off going with the Max range as the speed may be prone to slicing for some.

The Epic Family

The Epic Speed is accompanied by the Epic Max and the Epic Max LS.

Both the Max and Max LS have adjustable weights (16 grams in the former and 13 in the latter). As you can imagine, the Epic Max is the most forgiving in the family.

Callaway Rogue ST Max  Driver – First Impressions

After our first swing with the Roge ST Max, we were very impressed by how solid and satisfying it felt.

Part of the solid feel comes from the internal bracing bars that are more laterally expansive to provide body support both horizontally and vertically. That, coupled with the titanium low-profile body bracing make for an exceptionally solid driver with a nice, comfortable and low center of gravity.

The Callaway Rogue ST Max also features an adjustable hosel for fine-tuning your shot shape.

The Rogue ST Family

The Rogue ST Max is the only one with a 26 gram tungsten weight. The Rogue ST Max D, Rogue ST Max LS and Rogue ST LS have either 23 gram or 20 gram weights. The Rogue ST LS was the most workable of the bunch and produced the lowest spin off the tee.

Callaway Epic Speed – Who are they for?

The Callaway Epic Speed driver would be great for anyone who needs some help with their swing speed and is interested purely in distance.

The Epic Speed driver doesn’t offer much in the way of workability but then again, it wasn’t designed for that.

If you are looking for straight shots that fly farther, the Epic Speed would be a solid choice.

The head was designed with a relatively flat crown to decrease drag so this driver might even be able to help you up your swing speed.

It doesn’t produce a ton of spin off the tee but there is still some.

Epic Family

The Epic Max and Max LS are packing a lot of the same technology as the Epic Speed but are more centered around forgiveness, slice elimination and straight, higher launching, more consistent shots.

The Max is super forgiving and the Max LS is a low spin version, aimed at straight shots for slicers and hookers.

The Epic Speed is built simply for distance and straightness.
