Titleist TSR4 Vs Titleist TSR3 Driver Comparison Overview

Titleist TSR4 Vs Titleist TSR3 Driver

A lot of people are really excited about the new TSR line of drivers from Titleist – and for good reason.

The TSR line has something for almost every kind of player. However, if you just look at the specs sheet and read about the features, you still won’t get the full picture on how they perform.

As such, it can be difficult to choose the right TSR driver for your needs without a fitting. But we’ve got the next best thing for you.

We went out and tested the Titleist TSR3 against the Titleist TSR4 to give you a better idea of which one would be best for you.

Titleist TSR4 Driver Overview

Titleist TSR4

“The Titleist TSR4 focuses on limiting ball spin off the tee.”

One of the oldest tricks in the book for reducing long game spin is placing weight forward in the club.

To that end, the Titleist TSR4 features 2 weighting positions: a front weight position that neutralizes spin and a rear weight position for a more natural flight.

Take note that the Titleist TSR4 is a 430cc driver so it has more of a player’s performance profile. This feature alone may be enough to deter high handicappers and we wouldn’t blame them.

The Titleist TSR4 is certainly for better players who have refined their swing but need a little extra help to reach the 280 yard drive range.

The launch angles you get from the Titleist TSR4 are very similar to what you get from the Titleist TSR3: low with shallow descent angles.

Titleist TSR3 Driver Overview

Titleist TSR3 Driver

“The Titleist TSR3 is a better driver for players who make consistent contact.”

If you know where you usually make contact and need a driver that can increase force in that area of the face, the Titleist TSR3 would be a great choice for you.

You can essentially put more power behind your swing no matter where you make contact with the 5-position (2 toe positions, 2 heel positions and a neutral position) sliding weight.

Average spin rates with the Titleist TSR3 were in the 2500 RPM range for our testers which isn’t terrible; but certainly higher compared to the Titleist TSR4. This hurt distance a bit even as the Titleist TSR3 is more versatile.

“If you can benefit more from limited spin, the Titleist TSR4 is the better driver. If you can get more distance from precise CG placement, the Titleist TSR3 is for you.”

Titleist TSR4 Driver – First Impressions

“Our first impression of the Titleist TSR4 was that it was light and looked fantastic.”

The 430cc head will certainly please more experienced players at address. And you can’t help but notice how light this driver feels even with a stiff shaft. When you swing the Titleist TSR4, you will also probably notice an increase in club head speed. While the face isn’t made of the most premium material, Titleist kept the overall weight of the Titleist TSR4 driver down with a thin crown and compact design.

The adjustable hosel gives you a wealth of CG and launch options during fitting. But most of all, our impression of the Titleist TSR4 was that it was certainly a Titleist club. You can feel and hear the precision that went into the design. Almost everything about this driver screams “premium.”

The TSR Family

The Titleist TSR2 is likely the TSR driver that will benefit you most if you are a high handicapper. The Titleist TSR3 is a good driver if you are looking for maximum adjustability and versatility.

The Titleist TSR3 Driver First Impressions

When you see the TSR3, your first impression might be that it looks very similar to the preceding TSi3 driver which was game by a ton of tour professionals over the past couple of years.

If you thought that, then you wouldn’t be wrong. The TSR3 sets out to ‘Refine’ the TSi3 without building an entirely new club.

The incremental improvements have been enough to get tour players already wielding the theTSR3 but it remains to be seen whether regular golfers will find it necessary to upgrade to the TSR3 from the TSi3 and in most cases, they probably wouldn’t need to.

The driver has improved on the aerodynamics with the boat trail at the back housing the tungsten weight which can be easily adjusted to your swing style.

The loft and lie can both also be easily adjusted to suit your swing or the course you are playing that day.

The Speed Ring VFT is forgiving on miss hits but when you catch the ball flush on the sweet spot, the ball will fly like a Tesla rocket ship.

All extras have been stripped to reduce weight and drag. The aerospace-grade titanium produces and epic sound and feel.

Another thing to note would be that while Taylormade have gone for Carbon based solutions and vowed never to return to Titanium, Titleist still continue to use Titanium in their drivers.

Overall the club is very confidence-inspiring at the tee box.

Who is the Titleist TSR4 Driver for?

“The Titleist TSR4 driver is best for mid to low handicappers who are looking to reach the next level of distance by eliminating spin.”

If you have reached a plateau with your drive then the Titleist TSR4 could certainly help. If you feel that you have maxed out your swing speed and your current driver isn’t doing enough to help you squeeze out the extra yards, a club like the Titleist TSR4 could be what you need.

A lot of players don’t consider spin rate until they have hit a wall so to speak with their long game. The Titleist TSR4 is the driver you should consider if that’s the position you’re in. When you have the front weight in place, spin is virtually eliminated. What you’re left with is a low, piercing launch that loses nothing in terms of hang time. Most of our testers notched average spin rates well under the 2500 RPM mark.

With all that being said, you should also be aware that the Titleist TSR4 is not the most forgiving driver on the market. The 430cc head and low launch will naturally be a challenge for beginners and high handicappers. However, that’s not really who the Titleist TSR4 was designed for. So if you are a more experienced player who wants to see what a low spin driver can do for your distance, the Titleist TSR4 is absolutely worth a fitting.
