Taylormade SIM2 Vs. Cobra LTDx Irons Comparison Overview

It’s that glorious time of the year when golf club manufacturers are rolling out their new lines. Today we will be taking a look at the new Cobra LTDx irons and comparing them against game-improvement stalwarts, the Taylormade SIM2 irons.

For this round of testing and subsequent comparison, we wanted to focus on how well these irons performed as purely game-improvement clubs relative to each other. Take a look at what we found…

Taylormade SIM2 Irons Overview

The Taylormade SIM2 irons have been providing golfers with the forgiveness and launch they need for a year now.

It’s crazy to think that the SIM2 irons debuted in February of 2021 because it feels like they’ve been around forever. What we liked most about these irons was that Taylormade did a tremendous job of predicting the mis-hits of high and mid handicap players.

Turning the club over on the downswing is a critical point of the swing overall – and the SIM2’s will compensate if you have not yet mastered the technique. The progressive CG throughout the set will help compensate for the mis-hits that are common out towards the toe.

Launch is also excellent with these irons. If your carry distance could use a boost, these would be great irons to work with. Still, for all they do for the long game, there isn’t much short game support. Distance is often difficult to reign in even in the short irons.

Cobra LTDx Irons Overview

The Cobra LTDx irons may not be as forgiving as the SIM2 irons overall; but they do provide better all-around performance.

The new face cup design of the Cobra LTDx irons extends deeper into the sole so the impact of a low-face miss is less detrimental. Still, you have to be pretty accurate with these irons – or at least more so than with the SIM2 irons.

But if your swing mechanics are disciplined, these clubs will reward you as you start to pull out the shorter irons. The Cobra LTDx irons launch high and the milled faces will help you get the kind of spin control needed to clamp down onto fast greens.

In our opinion, the Cobra LTDx irons do a better job of blending game-improvement and player’s performance characteristics into one set. The SIM2 irons will play longer and be more forgiving; but that’s pretty much the extent of their aid.

Cobra LTDx Irons – First Impressions

Even though these irons are new, they sport the same chunky sole that we have seen in previous Cobra models.

This was a comforting site for all the testers in our party. There’s no doubt that Cobra looked to make a stronger foray into the game-improvement iron market than they ever have before with the Cobra LTDx irons.

They launch high, increase forgiveness on low face misses and they flex to a high degree. What we were most impressed with though was that these irons still give you that Cobra players iron short game performance.

The grooves in the faces of the short irons are incredibly tight so you get an exceptional amount of short-game control from irons that fall into the game-improvement category.

Sim 2 Irons – First Impressions

Immediately noticeable on these irons is that they look pretty similar to the Sim Max irons but the Cap Back technology does stand out as being more solid.

We weren’t expected much difference in performance either and turned out to be true as well, the Sim 2 Max are slightly longer and lower launching than their predecessor which shows an incremental improvement but nothing overly major to write home about.

The echo dampener and cap back does make these irons feel a good bit smoother in the shorter irons and you can really get a good command of the ball with the forged feeling face.

Thru slot and ICT technology ensure the sweet spot is large and playable and that is another feature that we enjoyed about these clubs.

Overall the clubs do mark an improvement over the Sim Max in terms of distance, feel and control and we recommend giving these clubs a shot before committing to a purchase, because the Sim Max are still competitive and may be available for a keener price.

Who are the Cobra LTDx Irons for?

The new Cobra LTDx irons are some of the most complete game-improvement irons we have seen from Cobra in a long time. As such, they would fit well in the bags of mid to high handicappers; but they have a little bit to offer low handicap players as well.
