Taylormade SIM Max Vs. Cobra LTDx Irons Comparison Overview

Looking to take that next big leap in your golf game in 2022? Then you will probably be in the market for a new set of game-improvement irons. Luckily this is the perfect time of year to start your shopping because this is when companies are rolling out their latest and greatest models.

So we wanted to help you sort through all the marketing. For today’s comparison overview, we tested the new Cobra LTDx irons against the Taylormade SIM Max’s. We predicated our testing on determining which clubs would help the most players actually lower their handicap so let’s take a look.

Taylormade SIM Max Irons Overview

The Taylormade SIM Max irons were designed to increase forgiveness and distance for high handicap players.

And in these regards, they certainly don’t disappoint. The combination of a super-thin face and the famed Speed Pocket made it so that even our slow swing speed testers were getting distances in the high 180’s with the 4 iron.

We also liked that these irons had nice, wide soles. This not only looks comforting to high handicappers; but in a practical sense, it helps with launch. The inverted cone technology also helps increase ball speed on shots hit out near the toe.

Low-face misses are also covered with the Speed Pocket that is basically a channel bored into the bottom perimeter of the face. In terms of short-game performance though, there isn’t much to report.  Control is lacking as many of our testers sent flyers sailing over the green.

Cobra LTDx Irons Overview

The Cobra LTDx irons perform a bit more like player’s irons than the SIM Max’s.

We liked that the sweet spot has essentially been expanded in these irons thanks to a larger portion of the face that has been thinned out. The steel bar behind the sweet spot also helps increase distance for players with sub-average swing speeds.

But where these irons really shine is near the pin. The milled grooves provide an excellent degree of control. The heads are also a bit smaller so distance control on precise, short approaches are not so challenging.

What we found is that both these iron sets will help you lower your handicap – just for different players. The Cobra LTDx’s will help mid handicappers lower their score while the Taylormade SIM Max irons will be more beneficial to high teen handicappers and players in the 20’s.

Cobra LTDx Irons – First Impressions

Even though these irons are new, they sport the same chunky sole that we have seen in previous Cobra models.

This was a comforting site for all the testers in our party. There’s no doubt that Cobra looked to make a stronger foray into the game-improvement iron market than they ever have before with the Cobra LTDx irons.

They launch high, increase forgiveness on low face misses and they flex to a high degree. What we were most impressed with though was that these irons still give you that Cobra players iron short game performance.

The grooves in the faces of the short irons are incredibly tight so you get an exceptional amount of short-game control from irons that fall into the game-improvement category.

Taylormade Sim Max – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about these Irons is the striking looks. The clubs have a cavity back design with more thickness towards the bottom of the design for more ball speed.

In the clubs we have a low Center of Gravity, a wide sole for a bigger sweet spot, forgiveness and echo camping technology for a nice sound even on Mishits.

The Speed Bridge, Speed Pocket and and ultra thin face all account for club head transferring into balls speed for maximum distance, accuracy and tons of forgiveness.

The Sim comes in a Sim format, Sim Max and the Sim Max Os.

The Sim are going to be excellent for mid handicappers. The sim max is more forgiving for high handicappers and the Sim Max Os is more offset for anybody how needs maximum forgiveness and also offset to correct any slicing.

The Sim Max Irons have recently been upgraded to the Sim2 family for 2021.
