Ping i530 Vs Taylormade P790 Irons Review

i530 Vs P790 (1)

The players distance iron category is one of the most competitive in the game and the P790 have been sitting on top of that list for quite some time. The Ping i530’s will have something to say about that however so let’s take a look at how they compare.

On One hand the P790s are high flying, higher spinning and more accurate than the i530’s with a tighter dispersion.

The i530’s have stronger lofts and have a powerful sound a feel. More distance with a lower ball flight and less spin may make it difficult to stop the ball on the green consistently.

Taylormade P790 Irons Overview

The Taylormade P790 irons have had a new iteration in 2023 and they are suitable for players who want distance without sacrificing feel, sound and accuracy.

They are hollow body players distance irons that have a forged face insert and are injected with polymer to improve the sound and feel.

The P790’s are not as long as the i530’s from Ping but they produced more accuracy for us in testing and a tighter dispersion.

The lofts are weaker on the P790’s also which leads to a higher ball flight, more spin and better stopping power on the greens.

Overall, really nice sound and feel and great performance earns these irons the top spot.

Ping i530 Irons Overview

The Ping i530 irons are also players distance irons with a hollow body and are injected with polymer for a softer sound and feel.

The lofts are stronger and the irons look more powerful than the i525’s that came before them.

This obviously results in more distance with over 15 yards more distance than we were getting with the P790’s.

This does come at a cost though as the ball flight is lower and the spin rates also wont give as much stopping power on the greens.

Ping have address this by lowering the COG and including two more micromax grooves on the face.

Overall we found the Taloymades to be smoother and more accurate although a little shorter.

The Ping irons are a lot further but a wider dispersion, less consistent and less workable. Should be harder to hold the greens with the Ping irons.

Ping i530 Irons – First Impressions

“They look similar to the i525’s but a little boxier and stronger looking. Then you get them on the trackman and they sound better and fly longer.”

The i520’s are a hollow body players distance iron aimed at mid handicap players who want to pin hunt from further out in the hopes of increasing the number of birdies they can get without sacrificing performance.

The back wall of the face has been thinned to increase smash factor, flex and forgiveness. The polymer inside the head ensures a powerful yet smooth sound and feel.

The lofts have been strengthened and the COG has been lowered and deepened to ensure more distance while keeping spin rates and stopping power at acceptable levels.

The heads do look nice and compact at address but there is enough club there to inspire confidence and produce impressive distances.

Extra grooves have been added to increase spin rates and overall they are a nice upgrade on the i525’s.

Taylormade P790 – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.

Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.

The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.

The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodelling in 2019 and 2021, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.

All in all, definitely not for the high handicappers.
