Ping i530 Vs Ping i230 Irons Review
Two of the latest irons from Ping and suited to the better players in the golfing world. The i530 are players distance irons for mid handicappers and above and the i230 are players irons for low handicap golfers.
Ping i530 Irons Overview
“Hollow body players distance irons with a similar look to the preceeding i525’s but more boxy and powerful looking.”
The lofts have been strengthened and that means more distance in an iron already geared up for distance.
This is offset by lower, deeper COG for decent stopping power on the greens.
A forged face and thinner back wall mean a higher moi and the polymer behind the face ensures a smooth sound and feel.
The i530’s are for mid handicappers who want to attack the pin from further out.
Longer, lower and less spin than the i230’s but also more forgiving and easier to game for more mortal golfers.
Ping i230 Irons Overview
The i230’s are the players irons from Ping, they have smaller, more compact heads than the muscular i530s and they higher, more spinny and shorter than the i530’s but more workable and accurate and with better feel.”
The irons are blades and they look pleasing and thin at address while the rounded front edge cuts through the turf effortlessly.
The center of gravity is optimised in each club and the set is progressively more workable as you move towards the longer irons in the end of the bag.
The clubs have a 4 piece cavity badge for ultimate feel and the face is now thinner and heat treated for more MOI.
Overall both clubs are similar in many regards but the i530s are for ditance hunting consistent strikers and the i230s are for those who want to go as close to the pin as possible.

Ping i530 Irons – First Impressions
“They look similar to the i525’s but a little boxier and stronger looking. Then you get them on the trackman and they sound better and fly longer.”
The i520’s are a hollow body players distance iron aimed at mid handicap players who want to pin hunt from further out in the hopes of increasing the number of birdies they can get without sacrificing performance.
The back wall of the face has been thinned to increase smash factor, flex and forgiveness. The polymer inside the head ensures a powerful yet smooth sound and feel.
The lofts have been strengthened and the COG has been lowered and deepened to ensure more distance while keeping spin rates and stopping power at acceptable levels.
The heads do look nice and compact at address but there is enough club there to inspire confidence and produce impressive distances.
Extra grooves have been added to increase spin rates and overall they are a nice upgrade on the i525’s.

First impressions of the i230’s is that they are definitely players irons.
They have small compact heads which allow players to shape their shots and hit with supreme accuracy.
Higher handicap players won’t be able to hit well at all with these irons but the better players should be hitting them with consistency and tight dispersion.
In terms of improvement from the i210’s, they are longer and the long irons are more compact and player friendly.
The 5 piece construction and the elastomer allow for improved sound and feel with the weight savings used to lower the COG and increase the MOI meaning players should be hitting longer shots with increased workability.

Aidan Lehane here, I’m a Mid-low handicap golfer who has made tremendous progress in breaking 90 in just over 1 year of playing golf seriously.
I get out to the course or range as often as possible and review all the equipment I’ve come across on this blog.
