Ping G425 Vs. Cobra LTDx Driver Comparison & Review

With the new Cobra LTDx driver, it really seems as if Cobra was trying to appease pretty much every kind of player out there. This thing is loaded with both forgiveness and performance features. It’s almost overwhelming how many features are packed into this driver.

When we first got our hands on the Cobra LTDx driver and started testing it, we were reminded of another company that likes to cram their clubs with a lot of features: Ping. So we decided to test the new Cobra LTDx driver against the Ping G425.

Ping G425 Driver Overview

The Ping G425 was designed to play fast in the hands of a variety of players but also to provide superior versatility.

The aerodynamic shaping of the head and the crown “turbulators” are meant to decrease drag on your downswing. While our testers were not noting significant increases in club head speed, they did remark that the G425 did still feel light and fast.

Whether or not that is what translated to the distance couldn’t be determined. However, the G425 also features a sliding 26 gram weight that allows you to fine-tune CG. The forged titanium face insert also feels incredible on impact.

Our high handicap testers loved the adjustable weight while our low handicappers loved the feel of the Ping G425.

Cobra LTDx Driver Overview

The Cobra LTDx driver has a milled, 15-zone face design that blends seamlessly into the head.

This, like other CNC milled faces Cobra has produced, increases forgiveness tremendously because no matter where you make contact, your ball is going to go faster. Our testers noted that the Cobra LTDx was also much more workable than the G425.

While the Cobra LTDx driver does not have an adjustable rear weight, there is split mass weighting in the back and front along with an adjustable hosel. The Cobra LTDx also rivals the G425 in terms of speed and weight. It has a carbon fiber crown and sole along with a titanium chassis.

At the end of the day, the Cobra LTDx driver played longer than the Ping G425 driver too. Our testers were averaging drive distances of 230 yards with the Cobra LTDx as opposed to 219 with the Ping G425. The Ping G425 has a better feel overall but all the features loaded into the Cobra LTDx driver made for better distance and launch conditions.

Cobra LTDx Driver – First Impressions

Needless to say, we were pretty excited to get our hands on this new Cobra driver.

And while it wasn’t quite what we were expecting, it still smacked of that same old Cobra innovation. We weren’t quite expecting the Cobra LTDx to be such a “game-improvement” driver. But the higher handicap testers in our group were pleasantly surprised. Plus, the Cobra LTDx isn’t the only release in this model…

The LTD Family

Included in this new line of LTD drivers is the LTDx LS and the LTDx Max. The LS has the most forward-positioned weight so as you can imagine, it has the lowest spin rates. Of course, that means detracting a bit from MOI so it is not quite as forgiving as the Cobra LTDx. But if max forgiveness is what you’re after then you should be looking at the LTDx Max. It produces the highest launch and has an extra rear-weight to increase forgiveness.

Ping G425 Drivers – First Impressions

The Club is pretty understated in it’s design, it’s all black with some white logo writing and you can immediately notice the adjustable weighting in the back that can iron out any inherent flaws in your swing.

The weight on the back is tungsten and weighs 26g, the ultra light internal dragon fly crown allows for more weight in the back and face which is a forged insert, delivering incredible ball speed and accuracy.

The head is packing huge MOI of over 10,000, and it incorprates and ultralight hosel insert and internal ribbing for unrivalled feel, forgiveness and competitive distance.

The club comes in three formats:

The max will suit mid to high handicappers

The LST has a smaller 445cc head for the consistent mid to low to pro players

The SFT is the most forgiving of the drivers and best for beginners who tend to slice

Overall the G425 has excellent feel and consistent and rightfully takes its place as one of the top premium drivers on the market right now.

Who is the Cobra LTDx Driver for?

With the Cobra LTDx driver, Cobra went straight down the middle of the road – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

That phrase usually has a bad connotation attached to it for mediocrity but that is not what we mean here. The Cobra LTDx does a good job of straddling the line between forgiveness and fast ball speed. It features a new H.O.T. face which separates the face into 15 different sections. The 15 different sections represent different thicknesses to accommodate for common mis-hit areas.

It also features a titanium chassis that helps increase stability in the mid section without significantly increasing weight.

For beginners and high handicappers though, the real star of the show is the rear tungsten weighting. While we have to admit, this is a common and rather basic feature in game-improvement drivers, it still makes a low-spin driver more accessible to higher handicap players.
