Cobra Speedzone Vs. Taylormade M6 Driver Comparison Overview

In all our years of testing golf gear, we have come to know Cobra as a manufacturer that loves to pack a bunch of different features into each of their clubs. Sometimes it works to their advantage; but sometimes all the features feel tacked on and gimmicky.

To test one popular Cobra driver, we pitted it against a tried and true driver from Taylormade: the Taylormade M6. How does the Cobra Speedzone hold up? Do all of it’s fancy features hinder or help it? Find out in the following comparison overview.

Cobra Speedzone Driver Overview

The Cobra Speedzone features a carbon fiber crown, a milled face and a front to back adjustable weight.

Right off the bat, we would like to say that all of these features working in conjunction with one another make for an excellent-feeling driver. The Speedzone feels light and fast on the downswing, the milled face feels amazing on impact and when you adjust the weights just right, it produces great ball speed.

We loved setting the weight to the forward position so as to eliminate side spin. The results were hot balls that were going an average of 278 yards. The Speedzone is also surprisingly forgiving as the wraparound milled face preserves swing energy even on mis-hits.

However, we should mention that the other driver in the Speedzone family, the Speedzone Xtreme, is actually more forgiving than the standard Speedzone even as it lacks an adjustable weight.

Taylormade M6 Driver Overview

The Taylormade M6 also has a carbon crown and an extreme rear, fixed weight.

While the 46 gram rear weight did help with forgiveness (maybe even more than the Speedzone) it pretty much performed poorer than the Speedzone is almost every other regard. Spin rates were in the midrange with the M6 which brought average distance down to 266 yards for our testers.

The feel just wasn’t there either. The milled face of the Speedzone driver simply felt more solid and satisfying. While the Taylormade M6 keeps up with the Speedzone in terms of forgiveness and comfortability of swings; the Speedzone performed better where it mattered most.

The final verdict is that the Cobra Speedzone, for all it’s flowery marketing and features, really does provide a lot of value for many types of golfers. We would choose it over the Taylormade M6 any day of the week if only for the added distance.

The Taylormade M6 does a little more of everything that the M4 driver does.

Speedzone Driver – First Impressions

“The Cobra Speedzone doesn’t look like much at first, but it will quickly win you over with it’s superior feel and forgiveness.”

On the other end of the spectrum is the Cobra Speedzone which feels light in the hands as soon as you pick it up. We were really impressed from the feel and feedback of this driver.

It provides good forgiveness with perimeter weighting inside the head at the left and right corners of the face and at the rear of the head.

The Speedzone Family

Cobra also makes the Speedzone Xtreme driver which is more forgiving with an oversized face profile.

Taylormade M6 First Impressions

The Taylormade M6 certainly looks more intimidating than the M4at first glance but once you pick it up you can feel how light and wieldy it truly is.

The Taylormade M6 features a carbon sole to help offset the additional 46 grams of weight placed in the back of the head. It was very comfortable to swing and we got an instant boost in distance.

The M Family

The M6 is joined by, of course, the M4 and the M2. By comparison, the M2 is a bit lighter than the M6 but ultimately plays shorter.

Who Are The Speedzone Drivers For

The Cobra Speedzone are more for low handicap players with faster swing speeds.

You won’t get much in the way of distance from the Cobra Speedzone driver if you don’t have a good swing speed.

That being said, the Speedzone driver is accurate, generates great ball speed away from the sweet spot and feels amazing at impact

There’s also an adjustable weight that you can move to alter from forward CG to rear CG.

Cobra Speedzone Xtreme Driver

The Cobra Speeedzone Xtreme is a model that is more forgiving and consistent for high handicappers and players who generally struggle off the tee.

It’s got a lot of the same features but with a more pronounced offset to quell any slicing and a lower spin rate to keep the ball flying straighter.

Who is the Taylormade M6 for?

The Taylormade M6 would be a great choice for high to mid handicappers.

You get a good amount of distance and forgiveness help with the Taylormade M6 driver. The twist face does make it difficult to work. So just like with the M4 driver, the M6 is not an ideal choice for more seasoned players.

We also really like how the weight pulls your swing down ever so slightly to produce high launch. The extreme rear weight also helps distribute energy from your swing all over the face so you still get pretty impressive ball speed when you miss the sweet spot.
