The Callaway Strata have long held the title of best beginner set on the market while The Wilson Deep Red have come to bring them some real competition in the market.
Callaway Strata Overview
The Callaway Strata set is certainly made for beginner players with the large club heads and even larger sweet spots promoting distance and forgiveness for those who are new to the game or striving for the next level.
The driver is characterized by its large 460cc titanium head and that it sports a large sweet spot. The 10.5 degrees of loft and these clubs are aimed at the average swing speed.
The Driver, Hybrids and Woods have their weight low and in the back for high launching strikes from anywhere on the course.
The irons are steel shafted, have weighting in the heel and toe to stretch the sweet spots and the cavity backs are perfect by distance and forgiveness.

There is no doubt that the Wilson Deep Red set is a good option for beginners, incredibly well priced and the quality is also good.
In the set, you get a good blend of Driver, 1 Wood, 1 Hybrid, 5 – 9 irons, PW, SW and a blade putter.
The clubs are of a similar composition to the Strata, The Driver has a large 460cc head and a large sweet spot.
The Hybrid and Woods have low and deep weighting for long, high launching shots from the fairway.
The irons have deep cavities, thick soles, deep undercuts and perimeter weighting that beginners are going to need to play the game consistently well.
A quality stand bag and headcovers completes this excellent value set.
For us, the Strata set offers more forgiveness, performance and durability and the 16 piece set is an excellent option in our opinion. Wilson also offers a set that is 1″ longer so might be a good option for taller players.

This set looks pristine in the stand bag with all the head covers and irons jutting out of the top.
You can see that the set is made from beginners quickly with the generous lofts and large club heads.
The clubs are excellent for distance and forgiveness and the price is rock bottom.
Driver
The sweet spot is massive on the driver and the 10.5 degrees is for average swing speeds. If you are a fast swinger you may get too much loft with the driver as the weight is low and the back in the head.
Woods
The 15 degree fairway wood is great for shots from the fairway. You should get good consistency and high ball flight. Can also function as a substitute for the driver for slower swing speed.
Hybrids
The hybrid are rescue club can be an excellent option from the fairway or the rough and the sharp front line, cuts through the bush easily.
Irons
These cavity backs have a deep undercut for excellent turf interaction. The sweet spots are larger and the clubs are perfect for long and straight shots.
Wedges
A Pitching wedge and Sand Wedge with deep undercut and sharp grooves that offer good workability for a beginner set.
Putter
A basic blade putter with visual alignment.

Callaway Strata – First Impressions & Club Breakdowns
After seeing the 1000’s of positive reviews online, I was looking forward to getting my heads on the clubs and getting them out on the driving range for a test run was high on the list of priorities.
You can immediately tell that the clubs are good quality when you take them out of the bag. The clubs feel light to hold and the shafts are solid but do have a bit of flex.
Driver
The driver stands out initially with the large titanium head and massive sweet spot. The club is long accurate and forgiving.
3 Wood
The 3 Wood also has a large sweet spot and is a dream to hit off the fairway. These clubs are built for distance and if you have a slower swing speed, the 3 Wood can also be excellent off the tee.
Hybrids
With the 14 piece set, you get the 5 hybrid which is the perfect club for when you veer to the left or right of the fairway. If you want an extra hybrid that can close any distance gaps and replace some irons shots, go with the 16 piece set.
Irons
The irons are game improvement with thick soles, built for distance and they interact well with the turf making them easy to get in the air and towards the green.
Wedges
The pitching wedge is nice to hit and the lack of a Sand Wedge in the 12 piece set makes the 14 piece a must have for most beginners in my book.
Putter
No complaints with the putter, they haven’t tried to reinvent the wheel, it’s a simple blade putter with a solid shaft that gets the job done with visual alignment included.
Shafts
The shafts in all of the clubs with the Strata set are Steel but you have a choice between regular and stiff flex. There is also a ladies set with ladies flex available.
The clubs are built for forgiveness AND distance, so if you have an average to faster swing speed, Strata can be an excellent option.
