Callaway Mavrik Vs. Cobra LTDx Driver Comparison & Review

It’s the first quarter of 2022 and Cobra has already delighted us with the new Cobra LTDx driver. We have already done extensive testing of this driver and compared it to others. So far, what we know about the Cobra LTDx is that it produces fast ball speeds and is surprisingly forgiving.

What we didn’t know up to this point was how well it would hold up against another driver we know to be exceptionally fast and forgiving: the Callaway Mavrik driver. See which driver comes out on top in this comparison overview.

Callaway Mavrik Driver Overview

The Callaway Mavrik driver has an aerodynamic head shape and a face designed with the help of the Callaway Supercomputer.

Unfortunately, the standard Mavrik is the only driver in the Mavrik family not to feature an interchangeable weight. Through the purview of speed and forgiveness though, that’s really the only knock we have against it.

The face of this driver is made from a very reactive form of titanium. The combination of an ultra-thin and reactive face and an aerodynamic head shape (some of our testers were seeing increases in club head speed of up to 4MPH) make for incredible ball speeds.

Keeping it all in check are the Jailbreak bars that feature in many of Callaway’s clubs. The Callaway Mavrik driver also has a 460CC head which will look inviting to handicappers and beginners in need of forgiveness.

Cobra LTDx Driver Overview

The Cobra LTDx pushes ball speeds in a different way: by pushing spin rates down incredibly low.

Cobra loves forward weighting to reduce spin and the new Cobra LTDx driver is no exception. It has 19 grams of weight up front. The result is a driver that carries for days. Ball speeds were actually faster with the Cobra LTDx driver than with the Mavrik based on launch monitor readings.

The architecture of the face (multiple thickness zones) also eliminated side spin on reasonably accurate strikes, we noticed. While the Cobra LTDx did feel a bit more clunky and awkward on the downswing, distance and ball speed were superior to that of the Mavrik.

So which one was more forgiving? The Cobra LTDx did a better job of launching high and preserving ball speed on mis-hits so we would give it the slight edge over the Callaway Mavrik driver in terms of overall forgiveness.

A top driver from a top brand aimed at achieving maximum ball speeds, distance and forgiveness for any player.

Cobra LTDx Driver – First Impressions

Needless to say, we were pretty excited to get our hands on this new Cobra driver.

And while it wasn’t quite what we were expecting, it still smacked of that same old Cobra innovation. We weren’t quite expecting the Cobra LTDx to be such a “game-improvement” driver. But the higher handicap testers in our group were pleasantly surprised. Plus, the Cobra LTDx isn’t the only release in this model…

The LTD Family

Included in this new line of LTD drivers is the LTDx LS and the LTDx Max. The LS has the most forward-positioned weight so as you can imagine, it has the lowest spin rates. Of course, that means detracting a bit from MOI so it is not quite as forgiving as the Cobra LTDx. But if max forgiveness is what you’re after then you should be looking at the LTDx Max. It produces the highest launch and has an extra rear-weight to increase forgiveness.

Mavrik Driver – First Impressions

Once you get passed the bright colors and attractive design, you can immediately see how light and wieldy the Mavrik drivers really are.

The face on the club is huge and it gives you the confidence you need to let the driver rip, even on the first tee with a crowd gathered to watch. The face is also ultra thin, ultra light special steel which sends the ball into orbit on contact.

Two internal jailbreak bars on under side of the club hold everything together by connecting the sole with the crown and adding extra stability, feel, consistency and distance. The shape of the driver is also aerodynamic and like everything with the clubs, focused on more swing speed.

The Different Mavrik Driver Versions

The Mavrik is for your average player or mid handicapper, medium levels of forgiveness, and mid spin. This one has a standard launch angle too.

The Mavrik max is similar with more forgiveness and a higher ball flight for higher handicappers

The Mavrik Pro has a 450cc head, less forgiveness and spin and higher emphasis on distance for low handicappers and fast swingers.

Who is the Cobra LTDx Driver for?

With the Cobra LTDx driver, Cobra went straight down the middle of the road – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

That phrase usually has a bad connotation attached to it for mediocrity but that is not what we mean here. The Cobra LTDx does a good job of straddling the line between forgiveness and fast ball speed. It features a new H.O.T. face which separates the face into 15 different sections. The 15 different sections represent different thicknesses to accommodate for common mis-hit areas.

It also features a titanium chassis that helps increase stability in the mid section without significantly increasing weight.

For beginners and high handicappers though, the real star of the show is the rear tungsten weighting. While we have to admit, this is a common and rather basic feature in game-improvement drivers, it still makes a low-spin driver more accessible to higher handicap players.
