Are TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Irons Good for High Handicappers? – Are They Forgiving for Beginners?

The Taylormade 2.0 irons debuted back in 2010. 12 years have passed since their release and a lot has changed in terms of golf club design and manufacturing. Are the Taylormade 2.0 simply relics of an outdated past or do they still have something to offer high handicap players?

The Taylormade 2.0 are certainly game-improvement irons. That’s what they were designed for and that’s still the kind of value they offer today. The first thing you will notice about these irons is their size.

The Taylormade 2.0 irons are large, have a chunky look at address and there’s offset you can really see. They are great for straightening out your shot and yield impressive distance. But does all that add up to an iron set that’s actually good for beginners and high handicappers? Let’s find out.

Overview of the Taylormade 2.0 Irons

The faces of these irons were designed to be thin.

These days, manufacturers are getting club faces ridiculously thin so this is an area where the Taylormade 2.0 irons get left in the past a bit. The faces are 1.85mm thick. These days manufacturers are getting iron faces even thinner than that.

However, the Taylormade 2.0 irons certainly play hot. You can feel the ball spring off the face as it takes a penetrating trajectory. The Taylormade 2.0 have fairly weak lofts so expect low, piercing shot trajectories. These are cavity-back irons with plenty of offset.

What Type of Irons Are They?

The Taylormade 2.0’s are definitely game-improvement, distance irons. They were designed to play hot and add distance to the swings of high handicap players.

How Forgiving Are the Irons for High Handicappers?

The offset of the drivers will make them a godsend for anyone struggling against a slice.

The offset was comparable to and reminded us of the Big Bertha B21 irons. However, the heads of these irons are a bit smaller so you get better workability. Heel-side mis-hits were still trending towards the left a bit.

They have the inverted cone technology though so toe-side misses were staying straight online. The Taylormade 2.0 will also help greatly if you are struggling to get good distance from your irons.

Are The Burner 2.0 Irons Still Good?

The Burner 2.0 irons are somewhat of a classic iron.

They are as long and straight today as they ever have been in the past and with the irons being avalaible for a knock down price second hand today, they are an execllent option for high to mid handicappers looking to get their game to the next level.

Shaft Options

The Taylormade 2.0 irons are available with both steel and graphite shafts.

Stock shaft options for the Taylormade 2.0 irons include Burner 2.0 85 steel and Superfast 65 graphite shafts.

Workability Assessment

Our lower handicap testers weren’t able to work these irons very well.

Launch was generally low and the sheer size of the heads made them very hard to work from side to side. It’s pretty easy to pull the ball to the left with these irons so we would recommend anyone keep that in mind if they are considering buying these irons.

Spin was low in the long irons which is good for distance. The problem was that spin stayed low even with the short irons. They don’t help you grip the green very well and short-game workability is limited.

Distance Assessment

Of course, distance is where the Taylormade 2.0 irons really shine.

Even high handicappers will rejoice at the nearly immediate increase in distance they get from these irons. After three swings with the 7-iron in this set, our testers were averaging a distance of 156 yards. The flight was low and the roll distance was significant.

Accuracy & Consistency Assessment

The unsupported face does a lot to push the ball with greater speed; but it also hurts the consistency of these irons.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s not like these irons produced ballooning flight or were shooting off the face at ridiculous angles. But you have to be very mindful of your impact position. When you are able to pure the ball, the Taylormade 2.0 irons are very consistent and produce a long, straight flight path.

Do They Have a Beginner-Friendly Price?

You can get the Taylormade 2.0 irons for a price between $390 and $600. But the prices will vary with the retailer as these are older irons.

Ping G425 Irons

Different materials were used to design these irons giving them metal-wood-like flight.

With variable face technology and extreme perimeter weighting in the hosel and toe screw, these irons are very forgiving. Mis-hits were flying further than any other irons we tested for this review. It looks like a player’s iron but performs like a distance iron.

Our Recommendation

Pick up the Taylormade 2.0 if your main issue is distance.

If you aren’t getting to the pin quick enough than the Taylormade 2.0 will surely help. They aren’t the most accurate irons; but we think most high handicap players will appreciate the distance more than they will rue a lack of accuracy.
