Cobra Speedzone Vs Taylormade Sim Max Irons Comparison And Review 2021

As far as game-improvement irons go, you can’t do much better than Taylormade and Cobra. Both of these manufacturers have made landmark innovations in club design that we sort of take for granted these days as staples.

Still, if you are in the market for a game-improvement iron set then it would be a great idea to revisit some of these innovations and really see what they do and how they could benefit your game.

Take a look at our comparison overview of the SIM Max and Speedzone irons.

Cobra Speedzone Irons Overview

One of the first things you will notice at point of address is the carbon fiber topline that sort of resembles a checkered flag – we’re guessing that wasn’t a coincidence.

Cobra has made no qualms about how their clubs are inspired by race cars. And like race cars, the Cobra Speedzone irons play fast.

The carbon fiber topline is to keep the overall weight down and to make room for the extreme perimeter weighting.

The perimeter weighting makes these irons plenty forgiving and the light weight means that you can get good distance from them even if you have a slow swing speed.

In fact, some of our testers were getting 15 extra yards from the 5 iron of this set.

That all being said, don’t expect much short game performance from these iron. The rigid face makes them somewhat unworkable.

Taylormade SIM Max Irons Overview

The SIM Max irons on the other hand have an incredibly thin face that works to increase distance and provide a decent amount of greenside spin control.

The faces of these irons are 1.5 millimeters thick – that’s a thickness you usually only see from miraging steel. While these irons don’t have miraging steel faces they still perform great.

They have a nice feel at impact thanks to the Speed Bridge that spans over the otherwise cavity back.

The CG of these irons is nice and low so you get a comfortable swing in the long irons and good launch in the short irons. However, we would say that the Speedzone irons were more forgiving.

If you are looking for a more rounded out set of irons (distance, short game performance), we would suggest the SIM Max’s.

If however you are in need of more forgiveness, the Cobra Speedzone irons would be the best call.

Cobra Speedzone First Impressions

Cobra-Speedzone-Irons-6

When you first pick these irons up, it feels like that are too light to deliver the kind of distance that beginners with slower swing speeds need.

However, after you play around with them, you’ll realize that they do in fact produce good ball speed – even if you have a slower swing speed. The deep undercut allows the face to flex to a high degree; unleashing fast ball speed even fore beginner players.

We tested these irons in graphite shafts but you can also get them with KBS Tour 90 steel shafts. The graphite irons added to the distance and overall feel of these irons. They helped keep the weight down and contributed to flex.

There are also rear badges on these irons that are made form a combination of aluminum, acrylic foam and thermoplastic polyurethane. So even on full-bore swings, these irons maintain a nice, smooth feel.

The Cobra Speedzone irons don’t look or feel like much at first; but they really shine in terms of distance and forgiveness.

Taylormade Sim Max – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about these Irons is the striking looks. The clubs have a cavity back design with more thickness towards the bottom of the design for more ball speed.

In the clubs we have a low Center of Gravity, a wide sole for a bigger sweet spot, forgiveness and echo camping technology for a nice sound even on Mishits.

The Speed Bridge, Speed Pocket and and ultra thin face all account for club head transferring into balls speed for maximum distance, accuracy and tons of forgiveness.

The Sim Max Irons have recently been upgraded to the Sim2 family for 2021.

Who are the Cobra Speedzone Irons for

Cobra-Speedzone-Irons-5

The Cobra Speedzone irons would definitely be more suited to high handicap players.

Don’t get the wrong idea of these irons; they will not offer a lot of value to low handicap players. They don’t have the dynamic spin control that low handicappers value. They also don’t offer very much in the way of shot shaping ability.

However, none of that really matters if you are a high handicapper who is really just starting to get the hang of your irons. The price is right too. You can get a brand new complete set of Cobra Speedzone irons for around $600.

The Cobra Speedzone irons are definitely for high handicappers who need help in the distance and accuracy departments. While they won’t be able to help much as you lower your score; the relatively low price still makes them a decent value for high handicappers and beginners.

The Radspeed Irons from Cobra

Cobra also makes the Radspeed line of irons that are geared more toward mid to low handicappers.

If you are looking for better performance around the pin then the Radspeed irons would be better for you. They even come in single length sets if you want better consistency. The Radspeed irons are a more complete set as they are designed to play long while the shorter irons enhance spin control.
