Wilson D7 Irons Review – Good for High Handicappers & Forgiving?

Wilson D7 Irons

“It’s been three years since the launch of the Wilson D7 and you can still see them being gamed at your local club.”

The fact that Wilson D7 irons are still pretty popular is a good indicator of their worth. But could they really help your game?

First and foremost, these are super game improvement irons. Right off the bat, that should tell you a couple of things.

One, it means that the Wilson D7 irons are beefy. Two, it means that they are geared toward higher handicap players.

We wanted to see what the Wilson D7 irons were all about and if they really could help players lower their score so we revisited them in a fresh test session.

The Wilson D Iron Family

“Normally, if you see any Wilson golf club with a D in its name, you can bet that it was built for distance.”

That’s certainly the case with the Wilson D7 and the Wilson D9 irons.

We’ll get back to the Wilson D7’s in a moment; but if you are looking for a more subtle approach to game improvement, teh Wilson D9 irons are a good choice.

They have many of the same technologies as the Wilson D7 irons. However, the Wilson D9 irons have a more compact shape.

The D9’s also have stronger lofts and produce noticeably less spin than the Wilson D7 irons.

Are They Good for High Handicappers?

“One of the things that surprised us about the Wilson D7 irons was that it was very easy to make contact.”

The sweet spot is even more expansive than it looks. At a glance, the Wilson D7 irons are pretty big.

They don’t look like shovels at address; but there is enough mass here to put high handicappers at ease for sure.

Wilson says that they thinned out the face compared to the previous C200 and C300 irons – and it seems they were telling the truth.

The ball sprung off of the face during testing and the launch was nearly effortless.

The 9-iron in this set is 38° so the loft is moderately strong. But the CG is so low that you can still bring your ball down with snow on it.

The offset is moderate and less pronounced than in older Wilson irons. This was done to give the set a more appealing look.

But the forgiveness is still there. Saying that the Wilson D7 irons are viable for high handicappers would be an understatement – they are perfect for high handicappers.

Are They Forgiving?

“In addition to a thin face, the face profile is also pretty deep.”

At address, you can see how easy it’s going to be to make contact. The Wilson D7 irons feature “Power  Holes” which are small cavities bored into the sole and filled with a soft polymer.

The long and mid irons have three rows of Power holes, the short irons have two rows and the wedges have a single row.

The purpose of these power holes is to allow the face to flex more and to soften turf interaction.

The soles of these irons are considerable and have a nice contour that makes for a “glide” through the turf. Even from the rough, they encourage a light, sweeping motion.

The long irons are ridiculously easy to hit with and produce a towering launch while the short irons have a more controlled launch but are just as forgiving.

Difference Between the Wilson D7 Irons and the Wilson D9 Irons

“The main difference is the shaping.”

The D9 irons have a more compact shape and a shallower undercut cavity.

They are more workable compared to the Wilson D7 irons; but they still have the progressive “Power Hole” configuration.

Overall, the D9 irons are slightly less viable for high handicappers than the Wilson D7’s.

Available Shafts

When the Wilson D7 irons first came out Wilson released them with the UST Mamiya Recoil 460 shaft.

But today, you can get them secondhand with FST KBS Tour 80 shafts as well.

Are the Wilson D7 Irons Worth it?

“If you are trying to break 100, absolutely.”

These irons will give you confidence in your full swings and are likely to add 4-5 yards to  your shots – they did for us.

Who Are the Wilson D7 Irons for?

Wilson D7 Irons4

“These are strictly for beginners and high handicappers.”

There is pretty much no working these irons so they should be relegated to the bags of beginners and high handicappers.

That being said, the Wilson D7 irons are likely to give high handicappers a very quick distance boost.

Also, if you are struggling to get the ball up in the air and want to steepen your descent angles, you should definitely check these irons out.

It’s very easy to launch the ball high even from tough lies – this was especially true of the short irons and wedges.

Wilson D Family of Irons

However, if you are looking for lower launch and lower spin with a crisper look at address, there are always the Wilson D9 irons.

The D9’s are still forgiving but they also offer an element of workability for the slightly better player. And of course, the Wilson D9 irons will help you add distance to your shots.
