Wilson D7 Hybrid Review – Is it Forgiving?

Wilson D7 Hybrid

“The Wilson D7 was designed to be lightweight and to help slower swing speed players increase distance.”

The great thing about golf gear is that technology has become so advanced that players can actually negate the effects of things like slow swing speeds.

The Wilson D7 hybrid in particular is a testament to how technology has almost trumped natural ability.

In the following review, we will be taking an in-depth look at the Wilson D7 Hybrid and telling you what kind of player it would be best-suited to. Let’s take a look.

Key Features

  • Kevlar – Kevlar was used in the club head because it is exceptionally light and incredibly strong. Keep in mind that this is the stuff they make bullet-proof vests out of.
  • 455 Stainless Steel – 455 Carpenter stainless steel was used as a face insert. Once again this is a thin, light and strong type of stainless steel. It makes for a very reactive face.
  • Thin Cast Pockets – Four thin cast pockets were incorporated into the crown to help redistribute weight low in the club head.

Is the Wilson D7 Hybrid Forgiving?

“The Wilson D7 hybrid has a slightly smaller profile that we’re used to seeing in hybrid clubs.”

As you can see from the feature list above, almost all the tech that went into these hybrids was included to reduce head weight.

And while the Wilson D7 is certainly lightweight, you still get a good sense of where the club head is throughout your swing.

The smaller head profile may throw some players off, but the Wilson D7 is incredibly stable on all kinds of shots. That means that you’re likely to get straight flight even when you mis-hit.

Our testers also noted that it was very easy to turn the club over on the downswing. This allowed them to square the face better and achieve straight shots.

It’s not hard to find the sweet spot on this hybrid – and once you do, you will be rewarded with a really nice, crisp sound at impact and high launch.

But the best thing about the Wilson D7 hybrid is that it resulted in increased club head speed for our testers across the board.

What Handicap is the Wilson D7 Hybrid for?

The Wilson D7 hybrids would be good for players in the 17-22 handicap range – especially if you are struggling with club head speed.

The Wilson D7 feels manageable and offers a combination of high launch and straight flight.

Part of the performance and lightweight feel of the Wilson D7 hybrid has to be credited to the nice UST Mamiya Recoil shaft that it comes stock with.

The Wilson D7 hybrid will certainly help 17-22 handicappers handle long par 4’s without having to pull out their long irons.

It’s also a great replacement for longer irons because the profile is slimmer than many hybrids currently on the market so you almost get the sensation you’re just gaming beefy game improvement irons.

The Wilson D7 hybrids are available in six lofts: 17°, 19°, 22°, 25°, 28°, 31°.

Wilson D7 Hybrid – First Impressions

Wilson D7 Hybrid2

“The first thing that struck us about the Wilson D7 hybrid was how nice it looks.”

It certainly looks better than a lot of game improvement hybrids that are out there.

Aside from the polished chrome finish that adorns most of the crown and sole, there are royal blue appointments on the sole and in the back of the club head.

Plus, the smaller profile makes this hybrid look more professional.

In terms of performance, we were impressed with how easy it was to get a straight shot out of this hybrid.

For the most part, the Wilson D7 hybrid produces a sweet baby draw that never gets out of hand. Mis-hits aren’t severely punished and shot dispersion was nice and tight – even from the rough.

The Wilson D7 hybrid also worked really well for our testers who had a more deliberate swing tempo.

You can feel the club head gain speed  on your downswing and the UST Mamiya Recoil shaft loads up and releases really well.

Overall, this is a great hybrid to keep you on the fairway and increase your ball speed.

Who Are the Wilson D7 Hybrids for?

Wilson D7 Hybrid3

Luckily, the Wilson D7 hybrids come in an array of lofts so they can be good for anyone looking for a little more club head speed and accuracy.

Still, faster swingers won’t like the lack of substance from the club head. So really, the Wilson D7 hybrids are best for mid to high handicappers with a slow to moderate swing speed.

This group of players stands to gain the most from the lightweight feel and responsive face.

The Wilson Family of Hybrids

Another popular Wilson hybrid is the Wilson Launch Pad.

Unlike the Wilson D7 hybrid which would work well for mid and high handicappers, the Launch Pad is strictly for 20+ handicappers. It features internal draw bias so it is excellent for stopping a slice.

Like the Wilson D7 hybrid, the Wilson Launch Pad hybrid features a Carpenter stainless steel face. So you get the same crisp, metallic crack at impact and great ball speed.

However, the Wilson Launch Pad Hybrid launches considerably higher than the Wilson D7 hybrid.

So if you are having trouble getting air under the ball, the Launch Pad hybrid may be a good choice for you.

The Wilson Launch Pad hybrid also has a larger head profile than the Wilson D7 hybrid so it is generally more forgiving even if it is considerably less workable.
