True Temper XP 90 Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight
True Temper is one of the oldest iron shaft manufacturers in the industry.
Of course, everyone knows about their Dynamic Gold shafts which are gamed by some of the world’s best players. But what about the rest of us?
Does True Temper make anything for us mortal golfers? The answer is yes. Enter the True Temper XP 90 iron shaft.
The True Temper XP 90 is the lightest shaft offering in the XP series. And that’s saying quite a bit because the XP series is already known for being lightweight.
In the following True Temper XP 90 review, we will be telling you what you really need to know about this shaft.
True Temper XP 90 Shaft Overview
According to True Temper, the entire XP series was designed with distance in mind.
That’s fairly evident given the light weight classes that the series is offered in. The True Temper XP 90 takes things to a new level. As you can imagine, this is a 90 gram iron shaft.
It also has special design features that allow for more explosiveness at impact.
When we tested the True Temper XP 90 shaft, we were indeed seeing near-immediate increases in distance – about half a club’s worth of distance to give you a better idea.
In traditional True Temper fashion, the True Temper XP 90 has a very simple graphic design. It consists basically of a chrome finish with a black band near the grip that contains all the logos and branding.
So at address, there is nothing to distract you. The True Temper XP 90 feels lively but nowhere near noodly. You get an active kick low in the shaft that seems to help with club head speed.
As you can imagine, the launch is pretty high but spin rates are moderate.
You don’t get the sense that your ball will ever balloon out of control but it’s clear that the True Temper XP 90 was made for a specific type of player…
Why is the True Temper XP 90 So Popular?
The True Temper XP 90 is a popular choice because quite simply, it bears the True Temper name.
True Temper is renowned for their innovative, high-performance iron shafts.
Aside from the name brand benefits though, the True Temper XP 90 is an excellent shaft if you are a slow to moderate swing player who wants to reach the pin with fewer irons.
How Does the True Temper XP 90 Perform?
Yes, the True Temper XP 90 is lightweight but one of the more surprising performance aspects that our testers cited was the workability.
In our test session, our better testers were able to bend the ball almost at will. In general, you get a really pretty baby draw that swoops back on-line. But you can work the ball left or right by a surprising margin.
On mis-hits, the True Temper XP 90 remained stable. However, there was a loss of ball speed. We suppose that’s understandable since the primary focus of this shaft is distance.
But it’s still something that golfers should be aware of. Speaking of distance, the True Temper XP 90 definitely brings it.
On average, our testers were getting 159.4 yards out of the 6-iron with this shaft. Keep in mind that none of our testers for this session are powerful swingers.
For most of them, 159 yards represented a 5-10 yard distance increase. Another thing that surprised us was that the True Temper XP 90 offered up relatively low spin rates.
With a shaft of this weight, we were expecting high spin rates but were pleasantly surprised to see they stayed moderate.
