TecTecTec Ult-X Review – Is it Worth Buying?

TecTecTec unleashed the Ult-X on the golf world back in 2020 and it quickly became a popular mid-range laser rangefinder. But is it worth buying in 2023?

Rangefinders can give you a distinct edge in competitive play. They are also great for practice when you want to start shaving some strokes off your score. You have to be careful about which ones you buy though because not all of them are accurate.

Furthermore, not all of them include features that you really need on the course. Today we are going to be taking a detailed look at the TecTecTec Ult-X laser rangefinder that offers impressive range and aims to be helpful in a number of lie situations.

As we have already alluded to, the TecTecTec Ult-X relies on laser technology for it’s distance readings. Here is a brief overview of some of the features it brings to the table:

  • Pin-locking vibration
  • Range of up to 1000 yards
  • Slope calculation mode
  • Tournament legal mode

Is the TecTecTec Ult-X Waterproof?

The TecTecTec Ult-X is “water-resistant” not waterproof. So while you can certainly pull it out when there is a light drizzle with no problem, you shouldn’t be dropping this rangefinder in a like. Basically, it just can’t be submerged.

Is the TecTecTec Ult-X Worth Buying?

One of the best things about the TecTecTec Ult-X is the price. It generally retails around $250 which is a good price considering that you get all the essential features that a rangefinder should have.

The TecTecTec Ult-X will not provide you with some of the more advanced features that higher-end models have; but it’s still a solid buy for its price range.

As long as you are not a scratch player who is relying on a rangefinder to provide advanced metrics, the TecTecTec Ult-X is certainly worth a buy – especially considering the 30-day money-back guarantee offered by TecTecTec.

The TecTecTec Ult-X offers very clear images of targets which alone would make it worth the price.

TecTecTec Ult-X First Impressions

At first, we were really pleased with the simple design of the TecTecTec Ult-X. It looked like it was going to be easy to use right out of the box and it was.

The controls are extremely intuitive. There are 2 buttons on top of the device: a “mode” button and a “power” button. As you can probably imagine, the mode button allows you to toggle through the different modes (slope, tournament-legal etc.).

If you have ever used a golf rangefinder before then you will easily be able to start using the TecTecTec Ult-X right away. It has an adjustable eyepiece that can be turned to enhance the sharpness according  to your eyesight.

The TecTecTec Ult-X is also lightweight and ergonomically designed. The comfortable contours fit the hands of lal the testers in our party very well. It weighs just over 7 ounces so you won’t have to worry about it weighing down your golf bag either.

Key Features

The TecTecTec Ult-X offers 6x magnification with a crystal clear lens that renders crisp images.

The lens is multi-coated for maximum clarity and adjusting focus is incredibly intuitive. The TecTecTec Ult-X also has a scan mode where you can pan over the terrain in order to lock onto a specific target. Then, the unit vibrates to let you know that it has locked onto the intended target.

The slope mode shows you adjusted distances accounting for inclines and declines as well. You can switch out of this mode to make the TecTecTec Ult-X tournament-legal as well.

Perhaps the best thing about the TecTecTec Ult-X though is that it is accurate to within a yard at distances of 1000 yards. It gets more accurate the closer the target is, naturally.

One of the most helpful aspects of the TecTecTec Ult-X is that it allows you to start every hole with the important distance information you need. The TecTecTec Ult-X can pick up hazards up to 1000 yards away so right from your drive, you’ll know how you need to work the ball.

While it doesn’t necessarily break any new ground, the TecTecTec Ult-X still gives golfers all the essentials.

Who is the TecTecTec Ult-X for?

The TecTecTec Ult-X would be perfect for the golfer who doesn’t need or care for all the bells and whistles that can significantly drive up the costs of rangefinders.

Overall, it’s a mid-level rangefinder that would fit well in the bags of mid to high handicappers. In reality though, you don’t ever really need all the superfluous features that some of the more expensive rangefinders have.

Of course, rangefinder/golf GPS hybrids do offer more in terms of helpful features; but barring that, the TecTecTec Ult-X has everything you really need. You can get it for under $300 and the accuracy and clarity make it well worth that price range.

TecTecTec Ult-X Pros And Cons

  • The battery life is really good. It lasted for 3 full rounds for us
  • It comes with a microfiber cleaning cloth and a CR2 battery
  • The accuracy is superb which will be a huge plus for golfers of all skill-levels

Cons:

  • If you have an unsteady hand, you might have some trouble with the TecTecTec Ult-X
  • It only comes in one color scheme so if you don’t like black, white and neon yellow, you’re out of luck

  • It lacks some of the more advanced features that low-handicap players may find useful

Overall Score: 92/100
