Taylormade SIM Max Vs. Callaway Rogue ST Max Driver Comparison & Review

The Taylormade SIM Max is the most forgiving entry into a line of drivers that was built for forgiveness. It has a large footprint and looks great at point of address if you are having trouble with driver accuracy.

But recently, Callaway has released the new Rogue ST line of drivers that also features a “Max” version that promises a maximum amount of distance and forgiveness. So which driver delivers on their promises? Find out in the following comparison overview.

Taylormade SIM Max Driver Overview

The Taylormade SIM Max driver features an asymmetrical sole panel that houses a weight very far back in the head.

This is a feature that really helps place the CG nice and low and improves forgiveness across more areas of the face. The SIM Max also employs corrective face angles to straighten out shots that would otherwise shank. It wasn’t always the most effective though.

When we were testing, it wasn’t like none of our shots were slicing. But overall, the face curvature does help out extreme cases of a rightward miss. The SIM Max also has a pronounced footprint which looks great if you’re a beginner or high handicapper.

To top it all off, the Speed Pocket which is actually a common feature, helps the face flex more on low-face shots so more of your mis-hits become viable drives.

Callaway Rogue ST Max Driver Overview

The face of the Callaway Rogue ST Max driver does a great job of reducing ball spin.

The AI designed face of the new Callaway Rogue ST Max driver has been optimized to reduce spin and flex more in areas where new players tend to mis-hit. In reality though, the Callaway Rogue ST Max doesn’t really break new ground or introduce any new technology to increase forgiveness.

It’s a driver that simply gets the old things right. For example, there is a massive 26 gram tungsten weight in the back and low in the driver’s head. This puts plenty of power and a touch of draw bias behind your shots.

And you would think that all the tungsten would make this driver too heavy but the carbon fiber crown and the titanium body structure generate enough weight savings to compensate for the added weight.

The SIM Max had the better forgiveness features but the Callaway Rogue ST Max was the longer driver on average.

Sim Driver – First Impressions

At first, you may be a little intimidated with all the apparent bells and whistles of the Taylormade SIM.

We’re not going to sugarcoat it: the first time you pick up a Taylormade SIM driver you will probably notice the weight right away.

With a swing weight of D5 with a graphite shaft, this driver is a bit intimidating at first.

However, after you take the first swing and feel how the inertia generator effortlessly pulls the CG downward, you will be hooked.

The SIM Family

There is the standard SIM, the SIM Max and the SIM Max D Driver. All feature the twist face but the standard SIM is the only one with a movable weight.

Callaway Rogue ST Max  Driver – First Impressions

After our first swing with the Roge ST Max, we were very impressed by how solid and satisfying it felt.

Part of the solid feel comes from the internal bracing bars that are more laterally expansive to provide body support both horizontally and vertically. That, coupled with the titanium low-profile body bracing make for an exceptionally solid driver with a nice, comfortable and low center of gravity.

The Callaway Rogue ST Max also features an adjustable hosel for fine-tuning your shot shape.

The Rogue ST Family

The Rogue ST Max is the only one with a 26 gram tungsten weight. The Rogue ST Max D, Rogue ST Max LS and Rogue ST LS have either 23 gram or 20 gram weights. The Rogue ST LS was the most workable of the bunch and produced the lowest spin off the tee.
