TL:DR Overview
The P790’s are on their 4th iteration right now and are the most popular irons ever released by Taylormade.
The Srixon ZXi5’s utilize a Main Frame design to give accuracy, consistency and forgiveness in a compact head shape.
Both Irons are hollow bodies with urethane inside and fall into the Players Distance Iron Category that is a termed coined after the initial P790’s was so successful.
The lofts are a little stronger in the P790’s but they also deliver a steep land angle and more spin to catch the greens more easily.
The Srixon’s were lower and longer, with less spin to hold the greens.
Overall the P790’s felt better, were more consistent and the performance was better in terms of hunting the pins for mid handicappers.
The long irons in the ZXi5’s were longer and easier to control.
Overall we really liked the P790’s.

The p790 design is now Iconic in the game of golf following their wild success with golfers looking for accuracy, distance and forgiveness in one iron.
The blades are more compact than a game improvement iron but not as small as a players iron aimed at low handicappers and pros.
Having said that, you will find the P790 Long irons on tour all the time, coupled with something like P770 for the shorter, scoring irons for more precision.
P790’s are superb for mid handicappers, when golfers try them out at a fitting, there is a good chance they will walk out of the shop with them.
The thin forged face and speed foam air behind it gives a really solid forged feel.
The True slot speed pocket underneath the sole give consistency even for shots low on the face.
The Tungsten in the heel and toe also offer forgiveness and consistency across the entire head.
Overall really good irons that are super popular with mid handicappers.
Srixon Zxi5 Irons Overview

The Zxi5’s from Srixon are also in the Players Distance irons category with a stable main frame and I forged face which is 7% lighter than its predecessor.
The main frame does bring about a chunkier sole than you might expect in a mid handicap iron and the top line is quite thick as well.
The irons look great in the back and the soft urethane inside gives a really smooth feel with stable and consistent performance.
Mixing matching in the set is encourage with the Zxi4 for better and the Zxi7 suiting the higher handicappers.
We have progressive grooves for more accuracy in the scoring irons and a VT tour Sole design to cut throught the turf effortlessly.
The Tungsten Weighting stretches the sweet spot effortlessly along the blade.

The P790 was the superior iron in our testing.
Higher, with more spin and more stopping power around the greens.
Also the looks, sound and feel are superior too, while the difference in distance is relatively low.
That doesn’t mean the P790’s will suit everybody. Also best to test them out at a proper golf fitting to see what works best for you.
Overall the p790’s are very hard to beat.

Taylormade P790 – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.
Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.
The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.
The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodeling in 2019 and 2021, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.
All in all, definitely more for the mid handicappers than the high handicappers and beginners.

You can tell these irons are for mid handicappers who want speed because the power look of soles.
They use Main Frame technology in the head with a Sup10 Condense forged head which is 7% softer than previous model, delivering in terms of speed.
The tungsten weight in the heel and toe will produce forgiveness and feel on off center shots.
The Tour VT sole cuts through the turf with ease and also keeps the dispersion tight on shots low on the face.
The ZXi5 sits in the middle of the longer and more forgiving ZXi4 and the ZXi7 players iron which is for low handicappers who want to target the pins and work the ball with more control.
All these clubs can be mix and matched meaning you can have the ZXi4 and 5 in the longer irons and then the ZXi5 or ZXi7 in the scoring irons for more precision.
Overall, the ZXi5 are compact irons that will suit more consistent strikers who want a blend of forgiveness, workability and distance.
They offer a higher shorter flight than the ZXi4’s.

The P790 irons will be most effective for the better players and certain mid handicappers who want to work the ball a bit more.
If you are looking for a blend of feel and distance, these are going to be the perfect irons for you. If you are just starting out in the game, you would be better off with a game improvement iron. The irons also have a forgiveness element and the mid to high handicappers will be a good target audience for the P790’s.
