Taylormade P790 Vs. Cobra Forged Tec Irons Review & Comparison
An interesting battle today between two of the leading hollow body irons on the market in the seasoned pro P790’s and the slightly newer Cobra King Forged Tec Irons.
Both of these hollow body irons contain foam inside the body that aid with distance, flex, forgivness and consistency that is more again to a mid handicap iron in a players iron body shape.
To be honest, these irons are very similar, but with a few key differences. Let’s jump into our over and comparison of these excellent irons.
Taylormade P790 Irons Overview
Both the P790 and the Forged Tec offer a more forgiving players distance iron and the sit between blades and game improvement irons on the golfing spectrum, aim at handicappers in the 15 – 5 range.
The P790’s have been wildly popular with golfers who want that players feel at address but also crave the distance and forgivness of a more beginner friendly iron.
Before they would have no option but now, these hollow body muscle backs have started to fill the game.
The Speed foam inside of the Taylormade makes all the difference in added speed and forgivness while maintaining the feel and workability.
The club head is a good bit smaller than the Cobra Forged Tec and players will need to be slightly more consistent to play the P790 over the Forged Tec Irons
The P790 was first released in 2017 and has had 2 upgrades since then.
The latest updaed using the 60% lighter SpeedFoam Air, has thinner walls to save weight and the extra weight is added in Tungsten towards the toe of the club which provides incredible stability and optimizes the COG.
The irons feel soft and sound amazing when hit on the sweet spot, which is also much bigger in the 2021 iteration, buoyed on by the Thru Slot Speed pocket which brings the sweet spot lower on the face of the club.
This best selling forged iron of all time will suit mid to low handicappers looking for a compact iron with feel and forgiveness down to the ground.
Cobra King Forged Tec Irons Overview
Cobra are a brand who is eager to take market share and they don’t mind taking risks and pushing the boat while they are at it, with the likes of one length irons and sponsoring the divisive Bryson Dechanmbeau.
There is no doubt that Cobra knew the Forged Tec Irons would be a success though as they came after seasoned winners like The P790’s and MP20’s.
The Cobra Forged Tec Irons have a ton of the same technology too:
They have a visible Tungsten screw weight in the toe and some in the heel to stretch the sweet spot.
They are filled with Foam microspheres which give a soft feel and lovely sound.
The have Pwr-Shell Forged face insert too which wraps into the sole and lowers the COG in the irons.
The Forged Tech are bigger headed than the P790’s however and they are stronger lofted.
This compunds to offer a longer and more forgiving iron but without as much feel and workability as the P790.
Overall Conclusion
The P790’s will be suited more to the player looking for feel and workability more than extra distance and forgiveness.
The Cobra King Forged Tec will suit those looking for Distance and forgivness with less workabililty than the P790’s while you can stille move the ball from left to right and achieve awesome stopping power on the greens.
Both irons offer a great bang for your buck but the Cobra Forge Tec are also slightly cheaper than the Taylormades and get the nod from us for this review.

Cobra Forged Tec Irons – First Impressions
“The irons look amazing in the bag and at the point of address with the thin top line and minimal offset of the muscle bag irons”
The club face is compact at address but the sole are is quite thick which is one of the reasons for the extra distance, we found ourselves shooting an iron less on several occasionals once we got the hang of the irons.
The irons have a nice soft feeling, thanks in part to the foam microspheres inside the hollow body irons.
The irons are also higher launching due to the PWR-Shell wrapping low on the face.
The tungsten weight screw is easily noticeable and a smaller weight towards the heel keep the CG low and towards the toe of the club.
This stretches the sweet spot along the face of the club and while it is compact, a consistent striker will get good use from it.
The clubs are quite workable if you want to play a draw or a fade and you get excellent control around the greens.
Taylormade P790 – First Impressions
The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.
Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.
The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.
The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodelling in 2019, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.
All in all, definitely not for the high handicappers.

The Cobra Forged Tec is one of the mor eplayer friendly clubs aimed at the low handicap range but there are som other options from Cobra for high to mid handicap golfers especially.
The Cobra Radspeed are distance irons with larger heads than the Cobra Forged Tec And Offer More forgiviness alongside more distance.
The Cobra LTDx irons are more forgiving and longer again as a new release in 2022. This are going to be great for high to mid handicappers looking for a game improvement/players distance iron.

Who Are The P790 Irons For
The P790 irons will be most effective for the better players and certain mid handicappers who want to work the ball a bit more.
If you are looking for a blend of feel and distance, these are going to be the perfect irons for you.
If you are just starting out in the game, you would be better off with a game improvement iron.

The P790 UDI is a driving iron with minimal offset and a straighter top line for incredible distance.
