Taylormade P790 Vs. Cobra DS Adapt Irons Comparison Overview

P790 Vs Cobra DS Adapt

Two hollow body distance irons that offer plenty in the way of distance and forgiveness with the Taylormade P790’s (23 edition) Vs the Cobra DS Adapt irons for the 2025 season.

Off the bat the Cobras have a larger profile, which should add forgiveness and consistency to players who don’t always strike the ball cleanly.

The P790’s are more premium with a forged face and a slightly smaller profile. They offer distance and forgiveness but also stopping power on the greens.

Lets take a look at both irons and then see how they got on in the testing.

Taylormade P790 (23 Edition) Overview

P790

The P790’s are Taylormade’s most popular clubs that they have ever released. They are currently on their 4th iteration which were released in 2023.

The P790’s have a more traditional blade look as opposed to the DS Adapt irons but are still big enough to inspire some confidence at address as opposed to the P770’s which are a good bit more compact.

The Forged Face is backed by Speed foam air which has gotten lighter over the years, allowing for a high MOI and a ton of distance. With the Lighter speed foam there is now more of it and the weight savings have allowed Taylormade to lower and deepen the COG for a relatively high ball flight.

There is tungsten in the head with a screw and in the heel to stretch the sweet spot and the lofts are strong for amazing distance.

A really strong iron that is hard to beat.

Cobra DS Adapt Irons

Cobra Adapt Irons 5

Cobra’s new hollow body game improvement irons are all about ball speed and distance while maintaining forgiveness.

They have large heads that are slightly hidden at address at the irons look nice with the gun smoke metallic finish.

The Clubs contain a Pwr Shell which is now large and wraps more around the heel and toe of the clubs.

The Ai H.O.T now has more sweet spots as well which should help to tighten the dispersion on mis hits.

These Cobra’s have strong lofts and they fall into competition with very popular players distance irons like the P790’s or the i530’s from Ping.

The Pwr Shell runs along the sole to improve forgiveness and add to the distance for shots low on the head.

The irons are also progressive which means a bigger head in the long irons and a smaller more compact head in the short irons for scoring.

All in all similar to the previous Dark Speed model.

Taylormade P790 Vs Cobra DS Adapt Irons Overall Performance

In the testing the Cobra Ds Adapts were a good bit longer, with a lower flight and less spin.

The P790’s were still very long but had a more towering flight and more spin with a lot more stopping power on the greens.

The dispersion was also a lot tighter with the P790’s. Even with a toe or heel shot we were getting roughly the same distance.

The DS Adapt was less consistent with a few fliers and shorter hits with the 7 iron which wont really suit the mid handicappers.

The feel and sound was also better off the forged face of the P790’s.

Overall the P790’s are a little more expensive but you can get them second hand and were the better clubs overall by a considerable bit.

Cobra DS Adapt Irons First Impressions

Cobra Adapt Irons 5

The first thing to notice about the Cobra Dark Speed Adapt irons is the large profile, decent design, the thick top line and the chunky soles.

The Power Shell face is noticeably larger and stretches further around the heel and toe of the clubs.

The hollow body construction now contains more urethane which helps increase the MOI and adds more distance while also generating a softer feel.

The vibrations are also considerably dampened while the speed bridge runs all along the bottom of the face to help with shots caught low and for players who tend to fat the ball.

The Hot Face technology has more data now and that is used to increase the amount of sweet spots across the face. The irons are quite forgiving on shots left and right of the sweet spot and when caught low.

Cpbra have utilised Tec Flow technology now so the long irons are longer and more distance oriented and the shorter irons are more concise with higher relative spin to attack the pins from 150 yards and in.

They have a ton of distance but also decent spin number which helps to catch the greens.

Overall very nice for high to mid handicappers looking for distance and forgiveness.

Category – Players Distance Irons

Taylormade P790 – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.

Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.

The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.

The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodelling in 2019 and 2021, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.

All in all, definitely not for the high handicappers.
