Taylormade P790 Vs Callaway Elyte Irons

Elyte Vs P790 Irons

The Callaway Elyte and Taylormade P790’s are different categories of irons but they is a certain crossover between the people who would buy either of these irons to improve their game.

The Gallway Elyte Irons are game improvement irons with a traditional Callaway rounded head and a 10X Ai smart face.

The P790s are hollow body players distance irons that offer golfers a lot of distance and a tight dispersion even on off center hits.

Taylormade P790

p790

The p790 are currently on their 4th generation and they are Taylormades best selling clubs of all time.

This is because they do two things extremely well. They hit the ball incredibly far and they offer a tight dispersion. They are hollow bodied and are filled with speed foam air to offer incredible distance.

This coupled with the thin face, offers incredible balls speeds alongside forged feel for an excellent iron experience. They have other Taylormade staples like the speed slot for shots short on the face which is optimise for a tight dispersion in terms of distance for strikes anywhere across the face.

The lofts are stong in the P790s and they have a low penetrating flight at sometimes lack spin that low handicappers will want to utilise. For the increase in distance, especially in the long irons, many mid to low handicappers will choose the P790’s which are much bigger and confidence inspiring than the P770s.

Callaway Elyte Irons Overview

The Callaway Elyte irons are game improvement irons with the patented Callaway round shape and excellent performance in terms of distance and accuracy.

Straight off the bat, they are higher flying and with more spin than the P790’s and they dont offer as much in terms of distance.

They do have plenty of features to attract high handicappers. Confidence inspire top line with chunk soles and a large head to make hitting the ball consistently a walk in the park.

The 10X Ai smart face now has 10 extra locations where golfers are hitting the face and we should see a tight dispersion in terms of distance from these irons any where on the face and we did find them very forgiving.

The speed frame ins now smaller which allows more urethane to be used and the sound and feel are quite nice on these irons.

The short irons nor utilise less loft which will get the ball higher in the air and allow you to catch the greens more easily.

Also a tri sole design for getting the ball in the air even if you hit the ground or fat the shot a bit first.

Overall an excellent set of irons for high to mid handicappers

Overall Comparison

The Callaway Elytes are for high handicappers and mid handicappers who want forgiveness alongside distance and a consistent ball flight for a moderately consistent swing.

The P790’s are for mid handicappers who strike the ball consistently and want distance, feel and tight dispersion to lower their handicap.

Category – Players Distance Irons

Taylormade P790 – First Impressions

The first thing to notice about the P790 irons is the compact, forged heads that come in a shape and style that will suit the better players.

Despite the players feel of the irons, they also come packed with technology that will add distance and forgiveness like the Thru Slot speed pocket, speed foam and inverted cone technology which allows more flex on impact.

The forged irons are actually a hollow construction, filled with speed foam which allows much greater distances to be achieved than the original P790’s and the tungsten weighting keeps the CG low for an easy launch for an iron of this type.

The original P790 irons, released in 2017, were definitely for the players but with the remodelling in 2019 and 2021, these can also be used for mid handicappers looking to test the waters of players irons.

All in all, definitely not for the high handicappers.

Callaway Elyte Irons First Impressions

The first thing we noticed about the Callaway Elyte irons is the shelf appeal and the beautiful chrome finish.

When you start hitting balls, you notice the beautiful sound and feel. The mainframe has been reduced in size by 20% and this extra space has been filled with more Urethane to crack up the distance, the sound, and the feel.

Next up is the AI10x face which has accumulated more data fro average golfers and has introduced an extra 10 sweet spots across the face. This means a tighter dispersion rate and almost no drop off in performance when you miss the sweet spot to the right or to the left.

There is minimal offset in the irons so if you are prone to a slice, these may not be the irons for your game.

Next up is the tri sole design which offers more forgiveness when the ball is hit low on the face. The Trailing edge is also sharper and cuts through the turf more easily. This helps with fat shots or when you hit the turf before the ball.

This type of sole had been traditionally left for better players irons but when tested in the game improvement irons, they also boosted performance and thus, are included.

Callaway have also bucked the trend and actually decreased lofts in the shorter irons to increase pin hunting abilities and stopping power.

We found the wedges to be really easy to hit and workable around the greens and from the bunkers.

There 4 version of the irons:
