Taylormade P770 Vs Ping i230 Irons Comparison Overview

Taylormade P770 Vs Ping i230 Irons

If you’re ready to leave your old game improvement irons behind and step up to a set that can keep up with your ever-lowering score, the Taylormade P770 irons and the Ping i230’s should definitely be on your radar.

We would say that both of these iron sets are suitable if you are in mad handicap territory, say anywhere from 10 to 16.

But there is much more to it than that. Join us as well tell you what you really need to know about the Ping i230’s and the Taylormade P770’s.

Taylormade P770 Irons Overview

“The first thing we have to mention about these irons is how soft and smooth they feel.”

They have a multi-material makeup which features a forged 4140 carbon steel face and a soft carbon steel body.

This combination makes for metal wood flexion that still allows for a ton of control. Flight path is not erratic but you still get explosive feel and distance from these irons.

They are fairly compact and there is not much offset to speak of so make sure your swing is on point.

If it is, you’ll be treated to a middling launch with moderate spin, oh, and amazing workability.

The feedback, overall feel and workability you get from these irons are very impressive. Though we also have to mention that you have to be pretty accurate to unlock all of their performance benefits.

Ping i230’s Overview

“The Ping i230 irons lack a forged construction; but that doesn’t stop them from having a nice, soft feel.”

The soft feel comes from the 4-layer cavity badge and the activated polymer insert. Overall, the Ping i230’s feel nice and offer the ability to launch the ball higher than the P770 irons.

The Ping i230 irons didn’t have ideal shot dispersion when compared to the P770’s though. Flight with these irons was a bit more erratic and inconsistent.

Still, we were very impressed with the spin properties we got from the short irons in this set. The face grooves are deep and aggressive and offer more than enough spin control in the short and mid irons.

“For more accuracy around the pin, we would recommend the Ping i230 irons. The Ping i230 would also probably be better for 13+ handicappers. The Taylormade P770’s offer great distance and a high degree of workability to better players.”

Taylormade P770 First Impressions

The first thing you will notice is the clear line of site you have to the ball thanks to the limited offset of these irons.

When you first take a look at the Taylormade P770 irons, you don’t automatically think distance.

That’s because they lack most of the visual features of your typical distance irons.

You will probably think that they are great for accurate approaches, shaping shots and higher spin rates; but not so much for distance.

After you take your first swing with 7 iron though (featuring 33 degrees of loft) you will be able to feel the speedy engine behind these irons which have a softer feel.

The Taylormade P770 irons feature a forged hollow body design that allow for maximum face flex.

The face is forged from 4140 carbon steel and is wrapped seamless style around the body which is also made from carbon steel.

You also get a whopping 46 grams of tungsten to fortify the sweet spot and launch the ball high and with workability.

Just because these are mid to low handicap player irons doesn’t mean that Taylormade has left out additional forgiveness features.

For instance, the ICT technology is progressive throughout the set which means that you get an optimized sweet spot location as you work down the set.

The Taylormade P770 have to be swung to believe. They look like players irons but they also have a lot of forgiveness features.

Not quite as long as some other irons but plenty else on offer with the P770’s.

Ping i230 Irons First Impressions

First impressions of the i230’s is that they are definitely players irons.

They have small compact heads which allow players to shape their shots and hit with supreme accuracy.

Higher handicap players won’t be able to hit well at all with these irons but the better players should be hitting them with consistency and tight dispersion.

In terms of improvement from the i210’s, they are longer and the long irons are more compact and player friendly.

The 5 piece construction and the elastomer allow for improved sound and feel with the weight savings used to lower the COG and increase the MOI meaning players should be hitting longer shots with increased workability.

The 4 piece Cavity Badge, Hydropearl finish, Micromax grooves and tungsten weight all improve the forgiveness, control, sound and feel that players can achieve.
