Taylormade M4 Vs. Callaway Rogue ST Max Driver Comparison & Review

These days, drivers are loaded up with so many features that it can be really difficult to determine which ones are actually helpful and which ones are bogus. This gets even harder when you are a new player and don’t have much experience with a lot of different drivers.

In order to help you find the right driver for your needs though, we tested two popular drivers and recorded our findings in the following comparison overview. Let us help you sort through all the features by checking out the following overview.

Taylormade M4 Driver Overview

The Taylormade M4 driver appears to have some superfluous features at first; but on closer inspection it is actually a forgiveness machine.

For instance, the “Geocoustic” design of the sole is supposed to enhance sound at impact which is not important for a lot of beginner players. However, we found that the design of the sole actually makes the face profile deeper.

The result was a very forgiving driver and expansive sweet spot for our high handicap testers. The setup at address was also something that our testers were impressed with. It inspires confidence at address and makes for easy alignment.

Distance was a bit lacking though. While many of our testers nailed the sweet spot with no problem, drives were still falling short of averages.

Callaway Rogue ST Max Driver Overview

The Callaway Rogue ST Max driver has a slew of more modern features that do a lot for both distance and forgiveness.

A massive 26 gram weight placed low and in the back is nothing new. But making all that possible is a new titanium chassis. The face is also incredibly thin and flexible low in the face and out towards the toe. This would make for an inconsistent and unpredictable drive but the bracing bars behind the face keep everything in check.

The weight is oriented to produce a slight draw bias so be aware of that if you have a fading problem and wouldn’t benefit from draw bias. The Callaway Rogue ST Max was also producing less spin than the Taylormade M4 which, more often than not, meant better distance.

While the Taylormade M4 driver performed admirable (especially in the arena of forgiveness) the features of the Callaway Rogue ST Max work together to present a more forgiving and longer driver overall.

Taylormade M4 First Impressions

The M4 driver looks great at point of address with a nice, beefy 460CC head.

Right away, the M4 looks great for beginners and high handicapper – or anyone with a slower swing speed in general.

We were also really impressed by the way this driver sounded and felt. You will find that the M4 really helps straighten out your drives as well. One of the caveats with this driver though is that launch angles were slightly lower when compared to the M6.

The M Family

Another worthwhile entry into the Taylormade M driver family is the M2 which is an extremely lightweight driver that features a multi-layer carbon crown and titanium body.

Callaway Rogue ST Max  Driver – First Impressions

After our first swing with the Roge ST Max, we were very impressed by how solid and satisfying it felt.

Part of the solid feel comes from the internal bracing bars that are more laterally expansive to provide body support both horizontally and vertically. That, coupled with the titanium low-profile body bracing make for an exceptionally solid driver with a nice, comfortable and low center of gravity.

The Callaway Rogue ST Max also features an adjustable hosel for fine-tuning your shot shape.

The Rogue ST Family

The Rogue ST Max is the only one with a 26 gram tungsten weight. The Rogue ST Max D, Rogue ST Max LS and Rogue ST LS have either 23 gram or 20 gram weights. The Rogue ST LS was the most workable of the bunch and produced the lowest spin off the tee.

Who is the Taylormade M4 Driver for?

The Taylormade M4 would make a great driver for anyone who is on a bit of a budget but still wants significant help with forgiveness.

Keep in mind though that if you really want to prioritize distance, the M4 played about 13 yards shorter than the Taylormade M6 driver on average.

The forgiveness of the M4 driver is at least on par with that of the Taylormade M6 driver though. And we actually think that the M4 sounds and feels better when you strike right on the sweet spot.

Also, it should be noted that the M4 is not so much for lower handicap players. The workability is minimal and if you have a faster swing speed, you might actually lose some distance with this driver.
